Baby found at rubbish dump recovering

2011-09-26 14:10

Bloemfontein - A newborn baby boy found wrapped in a blanket at a rubbish dump near an informal settlement in Bloemfontein was doing well in hospital on Monday.

Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic spokesperson Amanda Appelgryn said the child, named Caleb Hope, was in a good condition and breathing on his own.

“He is on antibiotics due to the environment he was found in.”

Workers at an informal rubbish dump near the JB Mafora settlement discovered the baby on Saturday afternoon and phoned emergency services.

Bite marks

ER24 paramedics found the baby boy with its umbilical cord still attached to the placenta. He was hypothermic and struggling to breathe.

Appelgryn said the baby had bite marks on his skin from ants while he was lying at the dump.

Madelaine Cornelissen, spokesperson for the Shiloh Zoe Hope Trust in Bloemfontein, said it was expected Caleb would remain in hospital for the next seven days for observation.

“In the meantime we, in collaboration with the department of social services, would be looking for a place of safety for the boy.”

The Shiloh Zoe Hope Trust is a non-profit organisation giving free help to unwanted babies and their mothers in Bloemfontein.

Cornelissen said they preferred to place the baby directly at a place of safety, with a family. Police were investigating.

hope the mother rots in hell, savage

      Taboo - 2011-09-26 14:26

I agree with you John. Cant belive that humans can be so cruel.

      Uthando - 2011-09-26 14:28

My heart bleeds & am so so sad for this baby. When I first saw the picture & read the headline, I just broke down & cried. To the mother: How can you do this to an innocent, defenceless soul? God blessed you & you threw His blessing in a rubbish bin? You shall reap what you sowed. *spit in your face*

      Bardy - 2011-09-26 14:30

The more you guys entertain moron's stupidity, the more he will post. Just ignore the poor lost racist soul. He is clearly living in a world of his own.

      GypseyAnn - 2011-09-26 14:32

@ Moron - get back to work and stop with your hate-filled speech!!!!

      Uthando - 2011-09-26 14:32

Not even 'to the mother' but 'to the incubator' cause no mother an do this to their offspring.

      McDaNife - 2011-09-26 14:44

This is terrible, hope the baby finds a good home.

      Danzig - 2011-09-26 15:00

Didn't Julius tell the masses a couple of months ago to go out and have as many babies as possible?

      Danzig - 2011-09-26 15:03

@ Taboo: They aren't humans - because HUMANS won't do that to their offspring.

      Fredster69 - 2011-09-26 15:10

@Danzig. I agree that it is inhumane, but these people are still human. Circumstances are different for all of us. Yes it is wrong what she did, but what are we doing to help. Just remember: Evil resides where good people do nothing....

      wt_zone - 2011-09-26 15:10

      This is hectic

      Johnny-BB - 2011-09-26 15:13

      ...Eishhh...!! ...only in Africa......

      sganja - 2011-09-26 15:17

Danzig "Didn't Julius tell the masses a couple of months ago to go out and have as many babies as possible? " Yes he did but he didnt say they must not take care of their babies.

      Danzig - 2011-09-26 15:19

@Fredster: Circumstances my a$$!! Everyone knows that when you become a parent, that child comes first in life in everything you do. The article says that there are homes nearby for unwanted children. So it's not due to circumstances, it's from a lack of common sense.

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 15:32

@ Danzig: You replied @ Taboo: "They aren't humans - because HUMANS won't do that to their offspring." Who are this "they" you refer to? Secondly: although a despicable act to have discarded a new born in such a fashion, no one seems to have considered the fact that the mother may not have had a choice in becoming pregnant? Rape and sexual abuse can also lead to pregnancy and more often than not the girl/woman's pleas are either not heard or ignored. Easy and comfortable to apply a blanket approach on the facts provided, not considering what we still don't know about the case.

      PikeLee - 2011-09-26 15:54

Valkerie using a little common sense here, but "they" refers to people who throw their babies away.

      PikeLee - 2011-09-26 15:58

@Valkerie and now applying a little humanity here, nothing justifies throwing your baby onto a rubbish heap. There are so many other options if the baby is unwanted. Leaving it to die a slow death is nothing short of inhumane people who do this "they" are soulless savages!

      Ron-ny - 2011-09-26 16:02

@Valkerie.. She carried the child for aprox. 9 months. there was enough time to arrange with welfare to take the child from her regardless weather she was raped. YOU are the narrow minded one here. What that beast did is nothing short of attempted murder.

      Enuff - 2011-09-26 16:28

@Valkerie - no one is saying she had to keep the child. There is no circumstance than can justify abandoning an innocent child! Much less a new born baby! Even less - leaving a newborn baby on a rubbish heap to die!!!! Even if she was gang raped by aliens with 3 eyes - the child deserves a chance!

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 17:25

@ PikeLee - thanks for the clarification. "Humanity" you say? Declaring the mother "soulless", non-human, an animal and then condemning her to death WITHOUT the full facts surrounding this event? Humane indeed. I don't condone what happened to the poor child, but am asking for a little restraint and logical reasoning. The facts presented in the article do not explain how the child arrived at the scene, nor does it identify the mother or explain the circumstances of the events leading up to the child's discovery. There simply are not enough facts available. The opinions of most here are based on generalisations and previous articles on the same subject will necessarily give rise to strong emotion. Condemn the act, for sure - but the person? Do you know her? My point is that we shouldn't be so quick to pass the blame onto a single person (the mother). It's the convenient thing to do. We forget that we live in a sick society where the mother's actions (sadly) can be "mitigated" by the several misapprehensions our citizens operate under: HIV is cured when you rape a child/virgin; sex is a commodity (human trafficking); drugs make you strong; the more children you have the richer you are.... etc. We can't view this event in a vacuum. We can't hope to better the situation if we do. In the bigger scheme of things, this mother is probably just as much a victim of the failing system as her child. Recognising this is truely the HUMANITY of the situation.

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 17:49

@ Enuff: Really? Have you ever been gang raped by 3-eyed aliens? Will you be able to distinguish your love for the child that resembles the fathers from your hate for the aliens that raped you? Could you look at a three-eyed baby and not be reminded of what happened to you? I agreed that this was a despicable action - but who is guilty? Do we know the facts, or are we working on a balance of probability here? The balance of probability states that: = HIV/AIDS cannot be cured by having sex with a child or virgin. Yet some believe it as fact and act on it without conscience. = Women are as productive as men in the corporate world. Yet their salaries are still on average less than their male counterparts' and they're still subjected to glass ceilings. = The incidence of child rape and ~pregnancy in this country is out of control with 2009/10's child rape figures standing at 68 332**!! Yet people on this forum and others blindly assume that the baby was - (i) abandoned by it's mother who (ii) fell pregnant willingly and out of choice who (iii) was well educated in all the alternatives and (vi) who had access to said alternatives and the support of others in her community. We still don't understand how prevalent these crimes are and how the one perpetuates the other. This must not be viewed or addressed in a vacuum! **

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 21:01

@ Ron-ny: So I'm "narrow minded" for considering the possible plight of the mother as well? This is not in spite of the child, and I stated my disgust with the child being discarded clearly. But thanks YOU for the insult....

      cliffarc - 2011-09-26 22:10

      - Danzig, PikeLee, Enuff and others - dont bother wasting time with this Valkerie. He condemns outright any arguments that dont accord with his own. He parades his pomposity and perceived superior intellect on a regular basis. Witness the vitriolic barrage about to come my way.

      PikeLee - 2011-09-27 08:25

@cliffarc Yeah, I realized that he obviously has no common sense when reading his responses. I wasn't going to bother responding. He comes across as a real pompous, pretentious, prissy and over politically correct idiot. I cannot comprehend, how anyone can justify leaving a new born on a rubbish dumb, to be eaten by ants!!!

      Cowley - 2011-09-28 12:22

I couldn't agree with you more. My heart goes out to this little boy. My son is 7 months old and I cannot think how a person can do such a thing to such a small vulnerable little person. Not even animals do this to their kids.

      Nissa - 2011-10-14 19:02

@vallerie. your a complete and total idiot. the end. I am a mother of 2 and she had 9 months to find a home for the baby, she could've put the baby on the front steps of a childrens home. ANYTHING but a trash can for the baby to suffer like this and be aline. the 2 things that a baby is afraid of when there born is being alone and being dropped. This baby was thrown into a rubbish bin!! the mother is nothing but a waste of space. Maybe she should be thrown and locked in a rubbish bin and eaten by ants, b=not able to feed herself, or let anyone know shes in there, and be as helpless as a NEWBPRN BABY!!! that baby did nothing to deserve this and weather or not it was rape or not well guess what we have hundreds of rapes in america everyday and the woman are strong enough to eiether raise the baby or give up for adoptioin to those not able to have babies. There is no way of justice for this. If she were in america she would get charged with murder!!! But its ok becasue no matter what you say KARMA IS A BITCH and will make her way around to this worthless excuse for a woman.

  • LLEWELLYN - 2011-09-26 14:20

      sganja - 2011-09-26 14:28

Who came up with this thing called 50/50, now we can't discipline women because of it.

      Thor - 2011-09-26 14:35

a direct result of rampand breeding without responsibility or care. We will go nowhere until the majority of people in SA starts being responsible.

      Uthando - 2011-09-26 14:36

WTF are u sganja to want to 'discipline' a grown a$$ woman?? Nx! We are not 'something that needs to be dealt with' you trolling idiot. We're flesh & blood just like you. The motherpo3s who did this to this little boy, is a criminal, NOT a woman!

@sganja Corrections MOTHERS....By the way why are you fuming? Have children of your own, if you dont have already, then you'll understand why I'm fuming. In fact, any decent, caring, empathetic & God fearing person, be it they are parents or not, will fume when reading this story.

      daaivark - 2011-09-26 14:55

      Uthando - 2011-09-26 15:29

@sganja I was fuming at your first comment, line to be exact: 'now we cant discipline women because of it' WTH do you think you are to want to 'discipline' a grown a$$ woman?? [Real] Women have a mind of their own and capable of using it to make decisions, be they right or wrong. So a [real] woman or mother, will NOT dump their offspring in rubbish dumps like trash! That's all I'm saying. We're not fighting here, I'm just offended by your 'discipline comment' and what it stands for regarding how to treat a woman.

      sganja - 2011-09-26 15:35

@Uthando My bad I apologise If the statement offended you and yes I'm not fighting with any one I'm just saying my views.

      GypseyAnn - 2011-09-26 15:37

@ sganja - all your comments just show how ignorant you are as well as your lack of breeding. What's this about disciplining women? Any man who tries to discipline a woman deserves to never shut his eyes again, particularly if I am that woman - I will beat him to death with the first heavy object I can find.

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 15:38

@ Thor: you're 100% sure that this was another child "due to rampanT breeding without care"? Never considered that the mother (possibly as young as 12 or 13) could be the victim or rape, abuse or incest? Nope, thought not. This could be the result of a number of equally awful but mitigating circumstances. Another knee-jerk reaction from the gallery after received titbits of information. Hope this baby finds a loving and caring home soon.

      sganja - 2011-09-26 15:48

@GypseyAnn Discipline is not about beating a person (don't be narrow minded) .

  • Chanel - 2011-09-26 14:23

I can't believe what I am reading! I am a mother of four children and find it hard to understand why a mother would abandon her newborn in such a manner. Is she heartless or just plain stupid? She should be found and punished. A person that can do a terrible crime like this is an utter waste of space. I wish that baby boy all the best and I hope that he will be placed with a family who will love him. Regards, Chanel Short (United Kingdom)

      Utopia - 2011-09-26 16:11

@Valkerie The only victim here is that little boy! You're constantly harping on the mother may have been raped, may have been trafficked, may have been whatever......more likely that she just didn't give a damn when she decided to have unprotected sex!

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 17:57

@ Utopia: ...and you know this for a fact? Do you have more information than the rest of us do? Given these statistics, what is "more likely": that she herself is a victim of abuse, possibly leading to her pregnancy or that she simply... [how did you put it] "didn't give a damn when she decided to have unprotected sex"? You sure you don't live in an imagines Utopia too? This is the reality of our world, and if we don't address it in its entirety we will lose the battle for a Utopia soon.

      Lyndatjie - 2011-09-26 18:55

@Valkerie... No matter the provocation - this person CHOSE to throw a living human being out like garbage where ants, rats and any predator could take a bite out of it while it dies a slow lingering death. No matter what happens to us as people - we always have a shred of humanity left in us to stop us from doing this. No matter if we are raped (and I HAVE been raped) do you take your anger, your dispair, your hurt out on a baby who is blameless. This person had options. There are hospitals, churches, police stations, ANYTHING BUT A GARBAGE HEAP... yet he/she/it chose to cause this child pain in the most inhuman way. I'm sorry... but NOTHING can excuse this behaviour... At some point there was a choice... and this barbaric act is what was chosen....

      Johan Jansen van Vuuren - 2011-09-29 19:40

@ Valkerie ... I am sorry to say this, but it does not matter what the circumstance regarding this matter. Let me ask you this, if you opened your front door one morning and found a baby outside, what would you do? Pick it up and throw it on the garbage heap, or take it inside, make it warm and then decide what to do with it. Any normal human would find a way to get this baby to a safe place, no matter his or her circumstances. Any place near humans would be better than a garbage heap.

  • Winsome - 2011-09-26 14:34

OMG! the poor little thing! I really hope they find the mother and cover her with honey and put her in that rubbish heap - the ants will think it is Christmas! How can any woman who has given birth do that to her child - this is unthinkable to me.

      bwcullen - 2011-10-14 13:32

it is hard to believe that people consider the circumstance. People need to look at the torture this baby was put through and realize regardless of what happened to the mother she needs to be SEVERELY punished. that baby could be scarred for life all because an irresponsible person (can't even call her a woman or mother) was only thinking of herself. I say find her, lock her in a padded cell with pictures of the baby covered in ants covering the walls, with a 24/7 recording of a new born baby crying and screaming. Another thought put her in an all women prison unprotected and tell the women what she did. However, I think that would be the easy way out. I have two sweet angelic boys and had very difficult high risk pregnancies and both boys had acid reflux and colic when they were born. Made for some very long stressful days and nights but would NEVER do anything to harm either one of them. We think alike TORTURE HER LIKE SHE DID THE BABY

  • - 2011-09-26 14:35

Disgusting!!! I hope this mother is found and prosecuted for attempted murder! Irrespective of race, this is an innocent baby! There are so many who would be happy to give it a loving and caring home.

  • Lyndatjie - 2011-09-26 14:37

  • Johnny - 2011-09-26 14:39

      pointsetia - 2011-09-26 14:53

well said sharkie !!!! a helpless little person being left to die on a rubbish heap, slowly being eaten alive by ants. if mothers don't want their children, do the decent thing and leave the baby, warmly wrapped in a safe place where it will quickly be found and taken care of. the woman who gave birth to this little boy is a coward of note and disgusting.

      Sharkie - 2011-09-26 15:07

if only it was only ants - those are rat bites too....

      pointsetia - 2011-09-26 17:31

you are right. did not think of that and some of those bite marks are too big for ants. makes it even worse doesn't it. no excuse for any woman to do this to a baby, whether she became pregnant due to rape, unmarried, unwanted pregnancy, whatever. have the decency to give the baby a chance. leave the baby at someone's door, at a hospital parking lot, police station, anywhere safe where the child can be found and taken care of. any woman who does not want their child does not need to become a murder on top of it. so very very sad!!!

      Valerie - 2011-10-14 02:22

Yes Sharkie i totally believe that. i have 3 boys and i cant even have it in my head what this woman was thinking i would never call her a mom due to the fact my belief is a mom would never do that to a defensive little bunddle of joy that is a GIFT GOD gave her but i do believe in KARMA and she is not nice at all, so that woman will deal with KARMA!!!!! i saw this and tears just ran down my cheeks how could anyone do this unspeekable act!!!!!!!!!

  • darkwing - 2011-09-26 14:44

This is so very, very sad. People must not have children unless they intend to give them the best they can. You don't have to be rich to give a child a good start in life. Love is the most important thing and I hope Caleb will get that.

  • Optimistic81 - 2011-09-26 14:49

She doesn't realise how blessed she is that she is able to have children, considering there are so many couples out there struggling, paying money, to try and concieve just one little baby and here she goes and dumps it on a dumping site. attempted murder.

  • WhatNews - 2011-09-26 14:50

So many women long to have a baby but can't and here is a precious gift thrown away like trash..probably because the birth-giver (not calling her a mother) is 15 years old and will just fall pregnant again within the next couple of months. I can't really blame lack of education because this stuff is on tv, at schools etc. it's pure ignorance.

  • Fedup - 2011-09-26 14:51

I'm sick and tired of these bitches that do this, for goodness sake if you don't want the baby give it up for adoption. Better still, don't have friggin sex.

      sganja - 2011-09-26 14:58

I totaly Agree with you Fedup

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 15:46

Again I have to ask: what if this "bitch" was raped? What if she didn't have any recourse inside her family or community? What does a female possibly as young as 12 or 13 really know of pregnancy, or where to go? The health care system is all but collapsed, unless you have private medical aid! Don't be so quick to blame the mother... this is not her fault alone. Our society perpetuates many myths surrounding sexual intercourse, and we're still very quick to judge.

      Sanity_Check - 2011-09-26 16:09

To Valkerie. Surely she could have given the baby up for adoption, or at least her family if she was not sure what to do.

      Natasha - 2011-09-26 16:23

@Valkerie ... oh enough already, fact, whether raped or not, unprotected sex or stupid sex myths, this kind of behaviour is still inexcusable... Surely she had a choice not to throw her baby out like rubbish. The woman deserves to be punished for her wrongs...

      cliffarc - 2011-09-27 08:09

      - Natasha - Valkerie does'nt deal with the facts - only hypothesis.

      ivory - 2011-09-27 21:29

Valkerie, I'm getting this suspicion that you could be that mother. you keep justifying what that monster did. Rape or not, to dump a baby like that is DISGUSTING! I bet if it was news about an innocent adult that gets stabbed to death, you would be fuming, am I right? So why does this little life mean any less? Just because his mother had such a horrible life. We all want to live, happy and loved, no matter how we came into this world!

  • LexiB - 2011-09-26 14:58

This is...well... Im at a lose for words! I am disgusted that this poor baby is in pain and that he was thrown away like rubbish. How could a person do this to their child.I think she should be bound and out into the rubbish dump, so that she can suffer and feel what she did. Sick! I hope they find her. If she didnt want him she could have taken him to an safe house. Also if she didnt want a child why did she do the deed in the first place!!!! I have no words to describe the true disgust I have for that women! Even if this beautiful child was unplanned for he did not deserve this, he deserves love, kisses and hugs! I hope that he recovers well and that a loving family takes him in. Good luck little one, our prayers are with you!

  • Goonygugu - 2011-09-26 14:59

That Thing that gave birth to this precious bundle should be tied up and left on the rubbish dump on the ant heap just like she did to this little ones... She is a complete waste of space!! Sies!! Hope they can find a home for this little angel

  • ChilliBiteMe - 2011-09-26 15:01

This Child has a major calling on his life! God has been with him and shall be with him all his life! They must be able to track down the parents using DNA, and they should be tried to the full extent of the law! We need to start praying for this disgusting and evil behaviour to stop. It is unacceptable and woman like this should be sterilized for life!God forgive them! and bless little Caleb Hope! I wish i could take him home and give him the life he deserves!

  • Brumilda - 2011-09-26 15:05

    can i have the baby

  • whysoserious - 2011-09-26 15:17

Hope this mother gets waht she deserves!

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 15:49

A fair trial, maybe? A chance to tell her side of the story for sure. Good point, let's hope she is treated fairly. After all, that's what she deserves.

      Ron-ny - 2011-09-26 16:16

@ Valkerie , There is no side to this story unless she was forced at gunpoint to leave her baby on a rat-infested dump. Whatever happened to you is no reason for you to keep on defending such barbaric behavior. Go deal with your guilt somewhere else.

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 19:17

@ Ron-ny: Are you serious? Do you think that it takes something to "happen to" people to take a stand against a perceived injustice? This is a Trial by Media, and the facts are not in yet. Most people are getting so emotional over this that they can't think further than "the mother must've done it, what a murderer she is"! Fact is, we don't know who the mother is, why she did it or under what circumstances it happened. She may very well have had a gun to her head! Most people are blind to the current socio-economic factors in our townships. Never mind the rape stats. But it's far more convenient to sit behind a keyboard and take the moral high ground, not knowing what Ground Zero is like on a daily basis! I'm taking a stand based on the (lack of) facts, and not the popular theory. I'm not sure what guilt you're referring to, but I refuse to apologise for having an opinion on this issue that's not 'mainstream' enough for you.

      Ron-ny - 2011-09-26 21:41

@ Valkerie .ok,I'm sorry for not seeing it from your point of view and I truly appologize for that. I am a father of a 4 year old and we are trying for a 2nd,and stories like this just gets my blood boiling to such an extend that I don't think clearly as to the repercussions that an emotional comment may have on someone that is merely stating their opinion. Again, I'm sorry.

      ivory - 2011-09-27 21:41

Valkerie, I can't believe what I'm reading. How can you justify this murder? We are all outraged when a father wipes out his entire family, and we all say Why did he have to kill the kids? This poor Caleb...I really don't feel like thinking about what the mother must've gone through, She should get rid of herself, not innocent people around her!

      27797215191 - 2011-09-30 09:10

@ Valkerie...Yes no one can dispute that for a woman to leave her child in a rubbish dump like that, that there must be some underlying issues..fine agreed, but having read the article having seen the pictures,do me a favour and explain one thing to me...why if a facility such as the Shiloh Zoe Hope trust exists didnt she simply leave him there?or at a hospital, granted she may not have had medical care but she could of left him in a place of safety where someone could of found him and taken care of him..but she didnt!! sh threw him away as if garbage.she didnt care whether he lived in fact it seems highly likely that she hoped he wouldnt!someone had made a comment previously that she had nine months to arrange what she wanted to do.nine months in which to formulate an idea or plan of how she would proceed, are you seriously gonna sit there and justify that after 9 months of contemplation her best course of action was dumping him in Rubbish??call me naive if you wish but I can not think of any reason or justification why anyone should try to condone her behaviour.I am part of a rape organisation so I understand the statistics I can understand the hatrid towards the rapists and consequences of rape, but having said that I cannot understand how a person could do that to a baby, yes you're righ when you say we dont know why she did it.but the fact remains that she did do it.she left that little boy there and he almost died!she didnt leave him outside a house or behind a shop or in a

      27797215191 - 2011-09-30 09:13

public bathroom where someone would be able to come upon him,she left him where the chances of him being found were very slim!now that in my eyes is Murder!! If the mother was to step forward she could be tried for attempted murder, had the baby died, what would your comment have been then??by all means feel for her and what drove her to do what she did, fine!! but never forget that she did do it!At the end of the day that babies mother tried to kill him by leaving him in the trash. There can be no justification for that!! regardless of her experiences, she basically tried to kill that child.and from all accounts nearly heart feels for Him,He alone is the true victim!!

      emma_lee20 - 2011-09-30 21:47

why is it all the mother's fault? how do you know it wasn't the father that dumped the baby there?? i am all for them getting what they deserve but all the blame shouldn't just be on her. the fact is someone left a baby in a dump pile to die a slow and painful death and that's not right, that's what people need to focus on. no matter what horrible things might have happened to the parents to cause this pregnancy, they should have done the right thing and left the baby somewhere it would be found and taken care of, not eaten alive!

  • Webster - 2011-09-26 15:20

Oh the cruelty of womankind of the baby in their womb. She'll go to hell for this for sure.

  • ANC Comrade - 2011-09-26 15:25

I hope the parents of this baby will die a slow painful death! A necklace would be a good death for the parents of this baby!

  • ANC Comrade - 2011-09-26 15:25

I hope the parents of this baby will die a slow painful death! A necklace would be a good death for the parents of this baby!

      GypseyAnn - 2011-09-26 15:39

More violence? Perhaps they should just be taught how babies are made and how to prevent them. Judge not, that you not be judged!

      Jaydee64 - 2011-10-01 01:25

Well said..I'm not an ANC voter..I'm a white South African and DA Voter..I'll shake your hand any day...

  • Honestly - 2011-09-26 15:31

Not even animals dump their young. Earlier there was a story about kids having sex at a younger age nowadays. Here we go. Welcome to the new SA

  • Bekka - 2011-09-26 15:33

A child really is God's blessing and gift of life, I'm diagnosed infertile and is living through painful treatments just to hold little soul in my arms... How cruel is anyone to do this to such a young life...

  • James - 2011-09-26 15:33

Only an animal can do something like that!!!The mother must be thrown in the rubbish.

      siren703 - 2011-09-26 15:45

No James other animals don’t do things like this they are extremely protective and nurturing of their young, it’s only animals of the humankind that are capable of this despicable behaviour. As disgusting as this is, it is unfortunately not surprising anymore, it’s becoming to common an occurrence babies been found all over the place. I live in a rather small town and it’s shocking to read almost every week in our local paper about newborns being found it pit toilets, on rubbish heaps, in dustbins, black bags, cupboards, etc. WHY is this happening, what more needs to be done to educate these fools?!?!?!?!

      ChilliBiteMe - 2011-09-26 15:45

Not even animals act this way! The devil really has a hold on some people and we all need to pray for them! This is the result of uneducation, drug abuse, Government lowering legal sex age, alcohol abuse and everything else that is not of God! It is sickening to think that a person can hold their new born baby in their arms and then decide to dump them and leave them for dead! It is so sad and we all need to get together and rally and do whatever is in our power as a country and community to stop this, to stop drugs merchants and to bring God back into the picture!!! dont you think?

      keng - 2011-09-26 17:42

James that was an unfortunate turn of phrase. In the insect world kick an ant hill. Their first reaction, no instinct, to save the young. Want to try something bigger. Try and smack a little lion cub, a baby leopard cub, infant elephant, buffalo calf in front of their mother. They will not ignore you. I promise. Non-humans protect their young naturally (as in the word nature). You know this Unfortunately mankind is breeding out of control (a terrible virus killing all other living species on the planet)and needs to be culled (naturally) down by a few billion. The remainder must learn to co-exist with nature. BTW I'm sure your comments were well intended.

  • Ross - 2011-09-26 15:37

    Another one - Bloody savages.

  • static - 2011-09-26 15:43

I think its best to wait for the mother's perspective or to know the full circumstances regarding this very sad news. If you watch CNN you will know about slavery. It is very possible that the mother of this child is a victim of slavery and indeed her "master" may have been responsible for this. Please keep an open mind about these things as opposed to expressing ignorant views.

      Ingrid - 2011-09-26 16:38

Thank you and thanks to Valkerie. All this righteous indignation flowing against the mother when no one knows whether it WAS her who abandoned the baby - she might have had it taken from her - she might be in an even worse situation, locked up and abused and unable to be rescued. Look at the rape statistics in our country. Look at the evidence of trafficking of girls.

  • mari.brits - 2011-09-26 15:43

is this mother ACTUALLY going to get away with this????!!!

      Face - 2011-09-26 16:43

Hope not! But she will regret this action for the rest of her existence.

  • Lee-ann - 2011-09-26 15:50

Lord God i pray that you send your angels to surround him in that hospital and give him comfort.Caleb has a purpose in life that is why you saved him and that is why he is still alive.i pray that you cover him with your blood and that he grows up to be a respectable man one day.

  • JustABlogger - 2011-09-26 15:56

I dont care who u are or what u might be goin through but such actions are purely inhuman! Its satanic to act this way towards these beautiful gifts we get from God! and as much as I dont believe in abortions, there are so many woman out there who are struggling to get such blessings, who would do anything to have what ur giving away so harshly "couldnt this person be human and take the child to the right facilities????" aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgh *pissed* am soooo disgusted!!!!

  • changeisGood - 2011-09-26 15:59

I have no words, the only thing I can say is, I pray that the never Failing GREAT ALMIGHTY gives this young and innocent soul strength and I hope he ends up in a family that will be able to look after him and give him an opportunity to become a better person, I hope you grow up strong and have an Opportunity to STUDY, so you can turn things around for yourself. Best of luck innocent, young and brave soul! I am not going to even waste my time and comment about the person who gave birth to this strong survivor, you may say i am judgemental, but she does not deserve to be called a parent! sad, sad, sad indeed!

  • kaz - 2011-09-26 16:06

why cant they drop the baby off at a place of care. hope they find the mother and punish her

  • Wynand - 2011-09-26 16:11

There is nothing anyone can say that will justify what happened here. This is a clear indication of the "respect" we as South Africans have for human life - not to mention what we are doing to the animal kingdom! Sorry to the mother, I hope you nerver experience the honour of becomming a parent!

  • Liberated - 2011-09-26 16:15

jus the headlines gave me shivers in my spine. I don't understand, but there are so many places were one can leave an unwanted baby.

      Face - 2011-09-26 16:47

Because there are so many dumps!!

  • Vanessa M - 2011-09-26 16:44

WHAT THE F*CK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? No wonder the world is the way it is, because look at the way people are brought into this world. We can't even look after our own children. It's disgusting.

      Face - 2011-09-26 16:53

This is nothing new to the human race!

  • Vivi - 2011-09-26 17:08

It's so sad that this happens and we all know of women who are trying to have children but can't...Haai sies maan!

  • rikkirex - 2011-09-26 17:16

I hope little Antony is doing well.

  • abg100 - 2011-09-26 17:37

As long as children are raised without morals, these disgusting deeds will continue. A human life has no value-a car gaurd is killed for not doing his job properly, babies dumped daily. Children are not educated to a moral ethic and we now see daily the shocking ammounts of cruel and inhumane treatment without any remorse. This is the legacy we are leaving our children.{those lucky enough to survive}Im surprised it hasnt been blamed on cultural differences!

  • pointsetia - 2011-09-26 17:51

Valkerin - sorry I don't buy it. Young girls from the age of 9 know about the dangers of sex without protection. They can go to clinics without their parents permission and get free contraception. Any woman who does not want the child she bears, no matter why she became pregnant, has alternatives. Adoption is one, leaving the child warmly wrapped and in a safe area where it can be quickly found and taken care of is another ie hospital/police parking lots, ladies restroom in big shopping malls etc. No excuse for dumping a baby on a dump site. Have you ever been to a dump site? If not, visit one then tell us you still have sympathy for the woman who is prepared to have her baby die slowly whilst starving, being chewed by rats and ants and freezing. Stuff happens in life but no excuse for becoming a prospective murderer or a murderer if the baby dies. Hopefully the woman will in future take the pill or keep away from men. NO EXCUSE in this day and age.

      jen - 2011-09-26 18:09

Pointsetia: And what a about the father, he should wear a condom. Where is he!?

      Valkerie - 2011-09-26 19:57

@ pointsetia: Considering the statistics, whether girls at the age of 9 or 19 know about the "dangers of sex" or about contraception is irrelevant when it comes to rape and abuse. Or are you suggesting that they converse with their abusers first before getting raped? What does a 9 year old know about sex? Do you see a 9 year old walking into her local clinic and asking for condoms, the Pill or injection? Recent events seem to suggest it illegal. [] I am not saying that this is not a deplorable situation but I refuse to believe that new mothers just discard their children at random. My conclusion is that the mother must have suffered under extraordinary circumstances, and to dismiss those possible circumstances for the knee jerk, easy and convenient one of "the mother is clearly guilty" is both unfair and unbalanced. This all is opinion of course, seeing as we still don't have all the facts. Given the statistics though, I suggest that the child may have been the result of a rape and that this can be considered as mitigating circumstance....if she was indeed the one discarding the child. Or maybe it was a failed illegal abortion...? Maybe she thought the child was still born? Point is: we just don't know and are all guessing.

  • jen - 2011-09-26 17:56

And where is the father, the co-creator of this poor child? Did the mother (and she should be punished) have the dad's support.

  • Woofix - 2011-09-26 17:56

This is horrific. Worse even as one take into account that this is just one out of many other cases per day in this Sircus Area country. Its high time they (educational dept.)must bring into their syllabes all the facts about getting children aswell as unwanted babies and what to do that is best. Even if the unwanted baby is a result of a rape case murder is not an option neither aborsion coz that is also murder. Apart from the fact that aborsion is legitimised in Sircus Area.

  • Adrian - 2011-09-26 18:08

All I read here is outrage and anger directed at the mother. But what you all are saying is "look at me, I am not this kind of person - I amm better and more civilised". Judgement is not what it is about right now. The tragedy here is what has happened to the child, his future in which he has to deal with the knowledge of being discarded by his mother. This has nothing to do with your self righteousness and rightous an=ger. This calls for concern for a child and a deep and compassionate sadness over the tragedy that leads to this kind of action and a desire to build a better life for all.
