Johannesburg - A Kempton Park woman is facing perjury charges after alleging that her newborn baby was kidnapped during a robbery on Monday night.

Gauteng police reported on Tuesday that a 13-day-old baby was kidnapped when three men and two women broke into a house and tied up the baby's mother and her teenage daughter.

Police later on Tuesday announced that the baby had been found safe with his mother, and had not been kidnapped.

It then emerged that the woman who claimed the baby had been kidnapped was not the baby's biological mother, and the baby was in fact four months old.

According to Eyewitness News, the woman, 42, allegedly told her husband she was pregnant and going to have a baby boy in Witbank last month. She is believed to have made an agreement with her niece to raise her baby. However, things changed when the young mother demanded her child back, leading to the kidnapping claims.

The Star reported on Wednesday that the woman had apparently lied to her husband about her pregnancy and fabricated the robbery and kidnapping claims to avoid telling him the truth about the baby.

She was arrested in eMalahleni and is facing perjury charges. She is due to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
