Baby 'shaken' at crèche

2013-06-21 11:55

Johannesburg - The parents of a baby girl who may have been left blind and brain damaged possibly due to shaken baby syndrome have laid a criminal charge against her nursery school, Beeld reported on Friday.

The 6-month-old girl was so badly injured that doctors had given her only a 50% chance of survival.

Her parents dropped her off at the nursery school in Faerie Glen, Pretoria, last Wednesday morning.

The school called just after 10:00 and said the girl couldn't breathe and she was being rushed to the Faerie Glen Hospital.

The girl was resuscitated, then transferred by ambulance to the Wilgers Hospital while she had persistent seizures and convulsions.

At the Wilgers Hospital, a paediatrician initially thought she had meningitis but tests could not confirm this.

A paediatric neurologist did brain scans, which showed bleeding and swelling on her brain. She also had retinal bleeding.

The neurologist diagnosed shaken baby syndrome, the report said.

The owner of the Babbelbekkie nursery school said in a statement she had no idea what could have caused the baby's condition.

Come on this is not the first time creches have been accused of abuse...........its disgusting.

      Surf City - 2013-06-21 12:15

Having experienced child abuse at a restaurant in Salt Rock, KZN by a 'child minder', I can only wonder what calibre of people these places are hiring to watch our children. This is generally where the problem arises. When there is no proper management to oversee employees (that are underpaid and not properly trained) these morons are putting our children in the hands of very damaged individuals daily.

      Puleng Mabuya - 2013-06-21 12:41

the owner says she doesn't know what hapenned she's lying so when she heard that a baby almost died in her creche she didn't ask what hapenned, close the creche and charge the b¥§ch with attemped murder.

      Sean Goldie - 2013-06-21 13:15

It would seem unfair to blame the creche opinion is the abusers could be either would not seem unreasonable to assume that the parents could have done this and the symptoms escalated whilst at the creche till the point of seizures etc.....

      PB - 2013-06-21 13:20

Just remember, it normally takes hours for the symptoms to appear - could have happened somewhere else the previous day too ... Innocent until proven guilty?

      Luke Daffue - 2013-06-21 14:25

Before you jump on the bandwagon. Has anyone considered that it might have been caused by the parents and then they drop kid off at school. I know it sounds awful and unthinkable but it is possible and has most likely happened in the past. So I would say wait for the facts to emerge before people start burning the creche

      tracykruger007 - 2013-06-21 14:45

Luke I agree. This could have been done over a period of time, not necessarily that day. Constant shaking could have been the cause of bleeding on the brain. Look at the parents first !

      Andre Van Deventer - 2013-06-21 15:08

Why are you so sure that this did not happen at home?

      Wendy Oosthuizen - 2013-06-21 19:52

Wake up people. This school has been in the newspaper more than once for child abuse. Referring to reports and video footage of this school tying a child to a matrass and beating others in september 2010. I myself was considering this school for my child when I was staying in pta , but I wasn't happy with the way kids were left on their own to play on cold tiles by themselves and when I did my research on this school found out that they had been acused of neglect and abuse. A six month old baby, shaken to that extent will present symptoms immediatly and this is a medical fact!

      Chantel Joubert - 2013-06-24 10:48

Hi Wendy, please do your homework! If you did, you would see that it is indeed not the same school. Huge differance between Pta North and Pta East isnt there!!!

  • Puleng Mabuya - 2013-06-21 12:08

  • Franscois Botha - 2013-06-21 12:15

I am glad that they named the place, they should be held accountable. Children are left in their care, with emphasis on "care".

      tracykruger007 - 2013-06-21 14:46

Francois You first have to prove that these things happened at this crèche previously. If not, look at the parents. !

  • Johan Pieters - 2013-06-21 12:27

I would like to shake the owner until she expierence retinal bleeding. My little baby girl is 18 months old and no amount of signed documents will stop me from burning the daycare to the ground if any such thing should happen to her.

      Sean Goldie - 2013-06-21 13:21

Who's the barbarian here???? you would be so focused on revenge you would probably burn the school down with infants still think you the better person??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • CraigJoseph - 2013-06-21 12:28

Who is actually capable of doing that to a child!?!?! I really hope who ever is responsible is brought to justice (not that it can reverse the physical damage already caused)! I really hope the little girl heals well and that the medical diagnosis isn't as serious as originally thought!

  • Jutice Forall - 2013-06-21 12:36

The homepage of this school's website states "...has been providing a loving, secure and stimulating environment that allows children to grow as individuals during all stages of development." This is obviously not true at all. Parents, get your children out of there and shut this place down immediately!

  • Wilna Gray - 2013-06-21 12:39

Living next to this specific creche for 24 years, I can tell you that I well believe this incident happened. They do not take care of your kids the way you think. I had many a battle with them, even took photographs to prove my point, but was called a lier. These parents should contact me, this has now gone too far.

  • Teri Bosman Bekker - 2013-06-21 12:40

  • Nicole Damons - 2013-06-21 12:50

What in the world can a 6 month old do to derserve that!!!!!! That is disguting and how on earth do u own a school and not have any idea what goes on in it??? I would kill I just don't get PEOPLE

  • Penny Kemert - 2013-06-21 13:03

Isn't it also an offense to know of child ill treatment or abuse and not to report it to the relevant authorities? Shame on you.

  • Beverley Salmon - 2013-06-21 13:11

Their website states that they have CCTV cameras - maybe someone was not aware of this??? Check the cameras!!! I have heard a lot of bad things from this nursery school before!!

  • Zena Williams - 2013-06-21 13:14

The same happened to my niece 6years ago, she was 11 months when she fell at day mother in Gordonsbay. She‘s been diagnosed with baby shaken syndrome. Completely paralysed, for the rest of her life, can’t talk, walk or even lift her arms. She’s C P as well. Wonder if this is the same woman, becoz she moved to Pretoria after the court trail. She’s free and my niece is in a wheel chair.

      Al Loots - 2013-06-21 13:48

Get yourself a gun and a balaclava. Do the right thing.

  • Sean Goldie - 2013-06-21 13:24

Government should legislate new laws pertaining to daycare and schools in general that they cannot operate without having CCTV installed and monitoring at all times....that is what I would do if I had a daycare protect myself from the parents that try and pin a case of child abuse on me or my staff......

  • Vanessa Govender - 2013-06-21 13:34

and thats the sole reason why i choose to stay at home and look after my own baby! My heart goes out to mothers who have no choice but to entrust their babies to others to care for ....

      Marcia Dhara - 2013-06-21 13:43

tell me about it, my baby was at a wonderful school in durban called epcot pre school where the people took care of my son like he was one of their own i thank god that i had found such a lovely school for him to attend. but i also only took him to school when he turned three and culd talk. my mother was the only person i trusted with my son for the first years of his life. my sympathies to the parents may god be with the little one.

  • Trisha Williams - 2013-06-21 13:51

I wonder if this isn't the same woman from Gordons Bay! The same happened to my niece 6 years ago . Then she moved to Pretoria after the court case! She only got 3years outside sentence for messing up an childs life . !!!!!!!!!!! Who eva that woman is who done this to this baby girl . I hate apon ur life!!!!! You will get your dam day !!!!!!

  • Angela Ndimande - 2013-06-21 13:52

That is why my kids dont go to creche before age 3 when they can talk, if Mrs Smith or MRs Ntaba hurts my child she'l tell me and then Mrs Smith will then answer to my hand work accordingly!!

  • Astrid Chantal Kalichuran - 2013-06-21 14:02

The owner has no idea what could have happened!!!This is a 6 month old baby! How hard was she shaken to cause bleeding of her brain? This is totally outrageous.

  • Susan Fouche - 2013-06-21 14:22

I know the parents personaly They are the most loving caring parent in the world. The mother is also the mother of my grandchild. they will never harm any of their children. So please sonot even think thai it has happened at home. Don't accuse the parents if you do not know them. have you got no heart ????? Pray for this baby please all of you instead of blaming the parents. The school is to blame for this and should be closed untill the matter has been resolved. I hope to God that a miricale will happen and she will recover from this horrible unthinkable deed Susan

      Ruan Keyser - 2013-06-21 14:55

How can you say the school is to blame? Do you know the home personally as well? If not "don't accuse her if you don't know her". It's very hypocritical of you. I do however hope and pray that the baby makes a full recovery and that the cause can be determined. Until then take both parties in consideration and don't point any fingers

      Dale Edwards - 2013-06-21 15:54

Hey Ruan. Give me your address so I can shake you around a bit. Thereafter you might see that the child was in the care of babbelbekkie, and they wouldnt have accepted the child in the morning had there been signs of abuse from the parents. If its not the people who had care of the baby thats responsible for this who is you ID10T

      Ruan Keyser - 2013-06-21 16:18

Dale, did you know that SBS can take days to weeks before taking effect? Almost the same with whiplash/concussion. It's the same with almost every head injury/truama. I also did not say it wasn't the caretaker. I just don't condemn/judge or point fingers as easily as you do without evidence. So please, before trying to be a keyboard warrior, do your research first and stop being so narrow minded

      Dale Edwards - 2013-06-21 22:12

Hi Ruan. I did not know that and will be doing my own fact finding. I however am a parent and know how robust a baby is. I cannot believe that the baby will be normal and all of a sudden convulse etc etc. It just doesnt work that way in my actual experience.

      Chantel Joubert - 2013-06-24 10:45

I know the teacher of the class personaly and I can also tell you she did not do this to the baby girl. She wouldnt hurt a fly!!!! I am sick of people pointing fingers with no evidance. I will pray for the baby girl and hope she gets better.

  • Ruan Keyser - 2013-06-21 14:51

I must say it's rather pathetic to see the majority of people here condemn this person without any sort of proof that she did shake the baby. Stop being blinded by rage and start realizing that there are more possibilities.

      Susan Fouche - 2013-06-21 15:15

You idiot read my comment It is my grandson's morher you are talking about. I know the house and the parents. why are you so sure it is the parent ? are you talking of experience do you skae babys untill they die ???????????????

      Ruan Keyser - 2013-06-21 15:25

Not once did I say it's the parents' fault. I just pointed out the fact that people should not accuse/blame either the parents' or school without evidence to back it. Just as you know your children to be loving parents that would not hurt a fly, just so is there someone who knows the caretaker the same way as well. Like I said in one of my previous comments, I hope and pray for full recovery for this baby. Good luck Susan, my thoughts are with you and your family

      Christiaan Welgens - 2013-06-22 08:20

Both my children are in that school, and I know the teacher in the baby class. I cannot see that she is to blame, baby shake syndrome if I remember correct might be caused by post natal depression.

      Wilna Gray - 2013-06-25 12:04

Basjan, I hope you never regret having your kids there. My daughter was also in that school, years ago, when the school was built. I was very satisfied, and never experienced any problems. But it takes only one irresponsible person to ruin a child's life forever and there has been many changes in personnel, very often. People just choose to ignore warnings. I have several emails that was sent between the school and I, where I saw (several times) during and after school hours how bigger kids are allowed to get onto the corrugated roof over the sandpit, then lean over into my property - standing upright - teasing my Dobermann - they can so easily lose their balance on that uneven surface and fall into my property. And it was NOT A BABY, but could have been your child? I feared for the safety of those children and kept making teachers and owner aware that this was happening, eventually realizing that I had to get something on paper to protect myself. The letters I received back were insulting to say the least, being called a liar...devoid of all truth...they would never allow this, etc. One parent told me that I was called a witch? -for trying to protect children? Only when I took photo's on my phone and sent it to the owner, did they apologize endlessly and said it would not happen again. I did not want to cause unnecessary trouble and I realize that I am very vulnerable to retribution for even sticking my head out. We are all too scared to get involved and keep quiet, not so?

  • precious.yumyum - 2013-06-22 04:58

Why do people take jobs in creches if they know they can't stand babies? OMG

  • Claudette Davis - 2013-06-22 11:21

Full investigation, not by the creche owner, dept that approves child care centres and SAPS.Responsible person to be charged. If I were the creche owner I'd shut my doors voluntarily.

  • Gail Hayes-Bean - 2013-06-22 11:33

If this creche has had previous charges laid against it then why is it still open? Don't people have to have permission to run creche's anymore and meet cerain specific criteria? That said, how much research did the parents do before choosing the creche and how lonf had the baby actually attended the creche? Deciding on a creche is often based on convenience to work and affordability and for all you know the person owning the creche is not a good employer and this was the result of a disgruntled employee. Let's not jump to hasty conclusions and start blaming people until a proper investigation has been done.

  • Dewald Joubert - 2013-06-22 13:36

Isn't this the same crèche where a video showing abuse was made a few years ago?

      Chantel Joubert - 2013-06-24 11:02

No it is not. Huge difference between Pta North and Faerie Glen (Pta East)

  • Chantel Joubert - 2013-06-24 11:01

People who think this is the same school that had previous charges please go and read this article and tell me if the address is the same!! I know the woman in the baby class personaly and I can tell you this, she would not hurt a fly!! I am also not implying that it was the parents! Something went wrong, and I hope it will be proven very soon!!

      Charmaine Honest - 2013-06-24 14:31

Chantel, I have also known that specific teacher personally, and I am telling you they hit and scream at those babies its shocking. Older kids get smacked with rulers. Catch a wake up. Its like they say "wat die oog nie sien" and just so you know my son was at that school and have proof of how they treat the kids.

      Chantel Joubert - 2013-06-25 14:29

Well all I can say is the teacher in the baby class is very dear to me and I do not agree with you saying they scream and hit the babies!! Never have I seen or had problems like this and this woman also watch my kids on a regular basis!!

  • Lizelle Williams - 2013-06-24 14:27

The same thing happened to my child when she was 11 months old this happened in 2007. She are left with severe brain damages, permanent disabled Cereble Palsy(CP). The day mother was not found guilty due to the court could not found enough evidence(person did not see it happen)but my child was already in acoma swelling on the brain and no survival change she was on life support. Want my dogter het 2 groot brein operasie gehad. epos:
