Pretoria - A man accused of killing his baby by using her as a "weapon" to beat his girlfriend appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Magistrate J C Kruger postponed the trial of Alexander Nde Forba, 32, to May 13 for further investigation.

Forba is also expected to apply for bail on that date.

He faces charges of murder and assault relating to the death of his 3-day-old baby girl at a petrol garage in Pretoria West.

Forba allegedly came home drunk to the flat he and his girlfriend shared with three other couples on the evening of February 15, and started arguing and assaulting her.

The mother escaped from the flat and went to a nearby garage.

The accused followed her and allegedly pulled the baby off her back and, gripping the baby by the legs, began assaulting the woman.

He then allegedly threw the baby on the ground and continued assaulting his girlfriend.

The baby was taken to Kalafong hospital but died of her injuries.

His trial was postponed at the request of the prosecution.
