Bloemfontein - A Free State couple will remain in custody after bail was denied in a case where they are accused of forcing their eleven year old daughter to have sex with men.

The girl and her nine year old brother were also allegedly forced to take drugs.

The couple face charges of rape, sexual exploitation of children, failure to comply with the commission against sexual offences against children and child abuse.

During the bail application, the investigative officer, Lesenyengo Matekane, told the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court that the mother held down her daughter so her friends could rape her. When she tried to escape, her mother allegedly punched her and tried to break her daughter’s fingers.

The police began investigating after a social worker complained about the conditions the children lived in. When police arrived at the house, their father hid the children in a room under blankets and dirty clothes.

Magistrate Akona Mqudlwa postponed the case to Monday, when it will be referred to the regional court and a trial date will be set.
