Pretoria - The State will not oppose bail in the matter of six men arrested for illegal possession of gold, the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday.

The State told the court it would not oppose bail of R50 000 for five of the men. A sixth man was granted bail of R5 000 during their first appearance earlier this month.

The six men, all employees of a cash-in-transit company, were arrested by a Hawks investigative team at the Pumulani toll plaza on the N1 to Pretoria. Five firearms were seized.

The men stand accused of smuggling 50kg of gold worth R23m.
