Memel - Three school children were killed on Monday when a bakkie crashed into them in Memel, Free State police said.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said four children, aged between seven and eight, were standing against a shop wall on Monday morning when the driver of a bakkie lost control of his vehicle.

The children, two girls and two boys, were waiting for transport to school.

"Three of the children, two girls and one boy, sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead on the scene."

It was believed the bakkie had been speeding.

"The children were pushed by the bakkie through the wall."

The remaining eight-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The 29-year-old driver, who claimed the bakkie's brakes failed, was arrested on the scene. He would face culpable homicide charges in the Memel District Court on Wednesday.

He could have been speeding, he could have had his brakes fail? This is a sad story, and i feel it will get worse. If the driver really had an issue with his brakes, it is an unforseen accident. If he was speeding, the accident could have been avoided. Touch and go here with regards to whether or not to charge the driver. Imagine you are the driver and u unintentionally have an accident where there are fatalities? Difficult situation for all involved here. RIP little ones.

So sad that at such a young age their lives were taken from them in a flash because of a negligent driver. R.I.P

Drivers of vehicles drive too fast! not obeying the rules of the road - discipline, self discipline lacking! Why is everyone always in a rush - to where? Lack of obedience to the law - someone always gets hurt - and it's normally the innocent - so sad!

The injured girl (not a boy) has been treated and released from the hospital. Please pray for the other kids at the Dumisani youth care center as they mourn this terrible loss.

  • ena.bromley - 2012-05-22 00:37

Please remember the orphans at Dumisani and at other youth care centers. This youth care center did not even receive their monthly funding from the government last month and now have two funerals to add to their expenses.
