Johannesburg - Seven people were killed and 19 others injured in an accident in Mpumalanga when a bakkie and taxi collided near KaMhlushwa on Saturday, the community safety department said.

The collision happened around 15:00, said spokesperson Joseph Mabuza in a statement.

"Preliminary investigations show that the bakkie lost control and drove on the lane reserved for oncoming vehicles and collided with the taxi which was trying to avoid the accident."

Both cars caught fire following the collision.

"Two people were ejected from the bakkie which was still moving before it burnt and [they] died instantly," said Mabuza.

"Five people, including both the drivers of the bakkie and the taxi, burnt to death while 19 [people] were rushed to Tonga and Shongwe hospitals."

MEC Vusi Shongwe appealed to motorists to always check that their cars were roadworthy before undertaking a journey.

"As a department we continue to educate our people about road safety while we strengthen law enforcement on our roads," he said.

He sent his condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Earlier this month, 30 people were killed when a bus collided with a truck in Moloto Road near Kwaggafontein on 11 November.
