Johannesburg - Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto has received upgraded laundry equipment, Gauteng MEC Bheki Nkosi said on Thursday.

"It will ensure that the 2 880-bed hospital provides better service to communities, and its high quality equipment will help save on energy, water and detergents."

Nkosi is responsible for infrastructure development. His spokesperson, Philemon Motshwaedi, said the new machines not only cleaned hospital bedding, but also handled ironing and packing.

Nkosi inspected the progress of the provincial government's R16.5m refurbishment of the hospital earlier in the day.

He said his department, together with the health department, had identified the need to replace equipment such as boilers, lifts, laundries, chillers, autoclaves, electrical reticulation, and generator switches at various health institutions.

The Charlotte Maxeke, George Mukhari, Jubilee, and Helen Joseph hospitals would also benefit.

The department had been allocated an appropriation of R57m for construction and R296m for maintenance in the 2012/13 financial year.

18 years later the ANC realises it has ruled by neglect with loss of lives. What is mentioned now is not a feather in the cap but should have been daily routine and maintenance.

Are we supposed to be impressed now?? Too late to care after hundreds have died because of Bara's neglect. Laundry should have been every-day basics, as should taking care of patients lying and waiting in passage ways .... WTF !
