Barbie getting bail is 'sick'

2010-02-24 22:40

Pretoria - The Child Abuse Action Group on Wednesday welcomed the seven year jail term imposed on convicted child molester Cézanne Visser, known as Advocate Barbie, but described her bail pending appeal as "sick".

It was sad in view of the sex charges against Visser, that she had been convicted, given "more than a fair sentence" yet still wanted to appeal, said Child Abuse Action Group director Lucy Redivo.

"What are we telling those children? They don't have a chance to appeal," she said.

Judge Chris Eksteen turned down an application by Visser for leave to appeal against his findings on the merits of the case, but extended her bail pending an application to the Supreme Court of Appeal for leave to appeal.

He increased her bail to R10 000 and ordered her to surrender her passport.

She would have to report to the Registrar of the High Court to start serving her sentence within 48 hours if her application did not succeed.

Mom evades reporters

Visser's mother, Susan Lemmer, tried to evade reporters after paying in the extra R5 000 bail on behalf of her daughter.

When she bumped a photographer on leaving the court, her husband sexologist Johan Lemmer apologised, saying his wife was under severe pressure.

Lemmer had hugged her and supported her in court when she started crying on hearing that her only child would go to jail.

Graphic designer Laurie Pieters, whose evidence played a role in Visser's conviction, said Visser's mother had asked her how she managed to sleep at night.

Little sympathy

She had replied that she slept well because she had not molested children.

"I knew her (Cézanne Visser), but she lied to me so much I don't think I really knew her.

"Part of me feels a little bit sorry for her, but I think she's a desperate person.

"I really believe children have to be protected, but she chose to prey on children. No, I don't believe I actually feel much sympathy for her," Pieters said.

During Visser's trial, Pieters testified that Visser's former lover, Dirk Prinsloo, was a narcissist and a bully, but that he backed off when confronted.

She told the court Visser had refused all her offers of help to get away from Prinsloo, had told Pieters he made her happy and that she was having great sex.

Appeal court 'may feel differently'

State prosecutor Andre Fourie was satisfied that the sentence imposed on Visser would send the message that the courts would not tolerate the abuse of women and children.

Should she choose to appeal her sentence, the State might counter appeal, he said.

Visser's advocate Johann Engelbrecht SC, earlier told Eksteen that he believed the Supreme Court of Appeal could reach a different conclusion on the case.

He suggested that it might find that Visser's actions were justified because she was a battered woman under the coercive control of a sexual sadist when she committed the crimes.

"It's not the end of the road," Engelbrecht he told reporters outside the court.

The sentence was not enough. Add a couple of years. Keep our children safe.

  • Me - 2010-02-25 06:17

I think that the sentence is to harsh. Taken as to how she was brainwashed by Dirk, and not just her, the other girls as well. Yes it was not right, but, rapists get three odd years for what they do that is far more worse. Justice in this country truly sucks. Sentence her to community service or something to the likes thereof.

  • darkwing - 2010-02-25 06:53

Those prison girls will be enjoying her expensive boobs.

  • Tersea Gouws - 2010-02-25 06:58

In life, most actions are preceded by enough time to consider what one is about to embark on. There were so many opportunities between deciding to use vulnerable girls as sex toys, turning up to select an ideal victim and doing the deed/s. Visser is as disturbed as Prinsloo, even more so because a woman should instinctively feel the need to protect an innocent. Her only interest throughout the trail was her own protection, with blatant disregard for the children whose lives she affected. What if they, in turn, prey on others? A 7-year sentence is nothing taking into account the premeditation that accompanied each act. Laurie Pieters, you go girl, there are no grey areas in a case like this, only black and white, right and wrong. Visser knew what she was doing and she should pay the price.

  • cc - 2010-02-25 07:03

What a sick sick woman... she must sit, no sympathy for her. Our children need our protection.

  • Blonde - 2010-02-25 07:26

South Africa has a judicial system? Absolutely Pathetic!

  • Rebecca - 2010-02-25 07:27

Sick Sick woman. What's R10k bail. TOO LITTLE!

  • Licia - 2010-02-25 07:29

The bitch should rot in jail!!! If she had hurt one of my babies .... I shudder to think. They preyed on children who were forsaken by their own parents, as if they haven't had enough hurt in their lives! SICK SICK SICK SICK!!!!!!! She should hang!!!

  • Sailor - 2010-02-25 07:30

    U are going down......down down down :)

  • GP - 2010-02-25 07:33

Wonder what Engelbrecht would have said if one of his children (if he has any) was molested by Barbie? She may have been a battered woman, but she was the only one of Prinloo's sex freaks who turned criminal to please him further. Would he still defended her actions?

  • Ams - 2010-02-25 07:34

Little miss Barbie is upset by 7 years of jail time - but those kids she molested will have to live with their abuse for the rest of their lives? Cezanne is lucky she doesn't have to sit through or pay for their counselling in the future. Sies Cezanne - for a WOMAN to do such a thing is despicable!

  • arfie - 2010-02-25 07:41

She should go to jail for the rest of her life without the option of parole. Her victims will suffer for the rest of their lives without respite so why should she?

  • Ockert - 2010-02-25 07:42

Knows how to the use the system, sorry that she fooled the judge. Hope the Court turns down her appeal process. I wonder how her legal team would have felt if it was their kids ?, If and When she goes to jail I strongly hope she meets up with family of the abused kids, that should be fun.

  • Marina - 2010-02-25 07:43

I was sexually abused as a kid, so I know what those kids are going through. But "Barbie" was as much a victim as those kids. I feel sorry for her.

  • Ethel - 2010-02-25 07:44

That poor woman would never have done those things without that bastard. They should let her go free.

  • Sandy - 2010-02-25 07:49

She is a liar and a manipulator. there should be no appeal...she must go to jail for what she did. she ruined innocent children's lives - has anybody asked Dirk Prinsloo to testify? Might get a whole different story. No, the sentence is light, but ok. Just a pity the children will not be ok for a long time. where is their justice? who gives them their innocence back? I hope her sentence is made longer when her appeal is heard. she has no right to walk free

  • Dr Steve Brule - 2010-02-25 07:51

I can't believe this, disgusting. This repulsive person should be put down like a dog but more painfully. And before people start saying cr@p like "other people get away with things" and "poor Cezane, she was also a victim", just think about it, preying on children is the lowest of the low and can't be compared with corruption or even rape of an adult, and no she wasn't also a "victim" she is an educated person in her 30's and has a mind of her own. She should suffer for what she did.

  • Dumisani - 2010-02-25 08:02

I feel that Barbie should not be condemned bcause it was prinsloo who manipulated her.Read how he manipulated the girls in Russia and if he was not caught i can guarantee you some woman there would have also resorted to what Barbie did.she deserves a second chance to prove herself. Prinsloo should suffer..the ...hole

  • Neels - 2010-02-25 08:04

Those that feel sorry, SORRY but you are wrong. There are structures in our communities to assist us. Being molested when a child, does not give you the right to molest and "kill" other children. I know Prinsloo also had his input, but Visser has a law degree and shoul dbe "clever" enough to come out of this. Her family should also helped here. This woman must rot in jail. Our children must be protected against criminals like this. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who went through a similar experience - you will tell another story!! I agree that the "babes" in jail will enjoy Visser's sex ideas and experiences.

  • Johan - 2010-02-25 08:04

How can anyone be sorry for her. She is a qualified advocate, knows the laws and the differance between right and wrong. now she wants to blame it on Dirk, it's the lamest defence ever. We need the death penalty for people like her.

  • absa - 2010-02-25 08:04

they must ad 43 years more.

  • Hmm... - 2010-02-25 08:09

I'd love to see all you lambasting Barbie here if you were in that situation. It's easy throwing the comments and hate from your nice secure life. You don't have ANY idea what brainwashing entails and how you are turned into a puppet, but hey, enjoy your nice secure life.........

  • chris - 2010-02-25 08:09

I was in the same position a long time ago, they should but her away for alot longer and i cant believe they have given her bail.....once again it shows that crime or any other related crime is acceptable in south-africa what is this world coming too.......She must rot in jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JR - 2010-02-25 08:15

Dr Steve Brule, I cannot agree more with you, well said. I believe the sentence should have been 17 years and not just 7 years. As for all those @ssholes who say "poor barbie" - I wonder if it were their daughters, if they would still feel the same - most unlikely!!!

  • Jason - 2010-02-25 08:21

Amazing how so many confuse BAIL with a FINE..... the R10K is BAIL - meaning you're not off the hook - merely preparing a second defense - which by the way , she will lose - ITS NOT A WALK FREE FINE. Get it right people.

  • cc - 2010-02-25 08:22

Barbie had a choice, she is a grown woman. She needs to get the death penalty. WE don't want people on this earth like here..Sick Sick Sick...........

  • jacques - 2010-02-25 08:22

You are all just emotional. Please look at all the facts. 7 years is enough, in fact half should have been suspended to ensure, as some suggested, she do not commit similar offences. As for some people I saw on TV last night - please do something with your appearance - you just look , well, no more said

  • ekke - 2010-02-25 08:23

this is for 'me'. i dont thin you have kids, but can you for a minute think that it was your child she was touching and doing thoses things to! she has destroyed themm and with her actions she has created more 'pedofiles' those kids will end up doing the same to someone elses kids! she is not stupid she knew what she was doing was wrong, i understand that she was bullied BUT she is an adult and she was wrong and the are conseqcences!

  • M - 2010-02-25 08:28

I would like to say that "Barbie" has further ruined those children's lives. The abuse WILL stay with them for the rest of their lives and WILL psychologically scar them forever. She is a pathetic rubbish and a waste of space.

  • disgusted - 2010-02-25 08:28

Let's put this in perspective: she was facing 11 counts of molestation, making & distributing porn. She got 7 years i.e less than one year per count. Is this how lightly we take child abuse in this country? it's no wonder we have the world's highest rape stats

  • @absa - 2010-02-25 08:31

    Today together tomorrow...How sweet

  • Linda - 2010-02-25 08:33

Barbie should rot in jail forever - along with her lawyer who is prepared to defend this scum.

Battered woman syndrome please!!! I never read that Prinsloo hit her or held a gun to her head. She was a willing participant and knows right from wrong. She just thought she could get away with it.

she is not sorry for the pain and hurt she caused her victims - she is just sorry that she got caught.

  • Blu@Me - 2010-02-25 08:36

Yes, a rapist gets 3 years, but I suppose that if this same rapist raped various people over a continuous period, and photograph this, he won't get away with three years.
And for a WOMEN to do this, she should get more.

  • Christo - 2010-02-25 08:51

The crimes that she has committed cannot be washed away with a bar of soap and therefore she should be punished according to the law. She should know better since she is an officer of the court, but what we don’t take into to consideration is the fact that none of us has been through what she had been through. So this makes it easier for us as society to pass a comment and Judgment on what she has done to the children.
If we were in her shoes at the time when the crimes were committed we should asked our self what we should have done as a person who was manipulate by a sexual sadistic man like Prinsloo. Why did the children's home allow the children to go with her? Don’t they have some form of controlling system or do they just hand out the children as puppies to strangers.
Let the law takes its own course unless you have been in a situation like that. You can pass a comment on her once you have in her shoes.

  • Lyn - 2010-02-25 08:56

She has ruined so many lives. She should rot in jail.

  • michele - 2010-02-25 08:57

the court just showed that monsters get away by giving her bail and a chance to appeal. she should have received the same time that Dirk received overseas. she had the chance to leave him but she didn't. those childrens lives are destroyed, they didnt have parents to protect them...they have to live with that everyday of their lives while she is running around on bail. God doesn't sleep barbie.

  • Gustav - 2010-02-25 09:03

To those people who say she must be freed: If it were your child that she molested, would you have said that she must be a free person? NO WAYS. SHE MUST BE PUT AWAY FOR LIFE!!!PITY THERE IS NO LONGER A DEATH PENALTY!!!

  • imraan - 2010-02-25 09:11

she is an adult, she must face up to her crimes.

  • Jake - 2010-02-25 09:13

Visser is typical of someone used to living the "high life". She can't get to grips with the concept of receiving the same punishment another mere mortal would have to face, for her deeds. She believes having to work as a lowly office worker after being an advocate is somehow sufficient sentence/punishment. Here's a newsflash for you Cezanne: your victims will be fortunate if they end up as office workers after you have finished with them. Most matriculated mere mortals spend their lives in these kind of jobs anyway - you shouldn't even have a job. Visser has no remorse for her deeds (or sympathy for her victims), as she still denies any wrongdoing. As proven by the current support received from her parents, she had the privilege of an affluent nurtured childhood which provided her a well educated, above average, life as an adult. She abused this platform to effectively wreck the lives of poor destitute children. Previously being an advocate (ie guardian of law & order?), I also think her 7-year (out in 3.5) sentence is a joke. If she was financially dependent on Prinsloo, she could've still gotten away with the "also a victim" sham. I was disgusted to see an Afrikaans newspaper flooding their pages with her baby photos during the trial period, as well as subtly slanting bias in her favour - did her dad pay them? As far as I'm concerned, even more incriminating evidence!

  • Tex - 2010-02-25 09:17

If these two were never caught, they would definitely extend their fetishes and resort to killing their victims one day. She is lucky to have been caught.

  • Yam - 2010-02-25 09:20

She knows the difference between right and wrong. No matter what he did, she knows. Seven years is not enough. Women are suppose to protect children.. Sies!

  • Jake - 2010-02-25 09:24

To "Hmm....": The reason we have a secure life we can throw comments from, is that we did not molest children. Just as secure as the life "Advocate Barbie" had before she decided to go "Pedo- Bonny & Clyde".

  • Jo - 2010-02-25 09:27

    Both of them disgust me!

  • AS - 2010-02-25 09:31

This "woman" only gets 7 years for what she did. The girls she did this, is carrying out a life sentence, don’t the court think she should also get a life sentence as well? As for everybody who feel sorry for her. Just one question: if she did this to your child, would you still feel sorry for her?

  • Neilo - 2010-02-25 09:41

she deserves to rot in jail.even if she gets the seven years in prison her conscious will trouble her for life, she will suffer for what she has done to those kids.KARMA will catch up with her. Good luck Barbie its only just begun.

  • Gonners - 2010-02-25 10:00

Where was Barbie when I was a kid, if she abused me I wouldn't go home. Could do with some of her abuse right now.

  • pops - 2010-02-25 10:02

If I were Barbie, I would now go do the time, study further in jail to become a psycologist or something, and when, on release, go find a jop to work with abused women and children. She knows first hand how that is. She would make an excellent counsillor. I mean, I do believe she is a changed person. She must see this as an opportunity to expand herself. We are all here to learn lessons in this life time. She must not let this get her under, but she must become the strong woman she is supposed to be, and which she up to now was not. She has it in her. She must just go find it. And make good on what she did. That will ensure her happily ever after. This should not be the end, but the beginning.

  • AJ - 2010-02-25 10:13

If she could go out on her own to pick up children for the themselves, then she could have left him too. She was not a prisoner. Enjoy jail you paedophile.

  • Rita - 2010-02-25 10:22

I find it quite ironic that Visser's dad is a sexologist, i wonder especially her being the only child, how she was brought up as far as sex education is concerned. Was it a no no or too much?

  • Sandy - 2010-02-25 10:22

I feel nothing for Barbie, what message is being sent out there? That you may abuse our children for the small sum of 7 years! Well if she thinks she was an abused woman then and she does end up inside... hmmmm ! ! !
