Johannesburg - A man in his fifties was killed when the beer truck he was driving overturned on a highway in Alberton on the East Rand on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on the N12-N3 split in Alberton. Photos on Twitter showed the front part of the truck in the bushes of an embankment while the rest of it blocked off part of the road.

The body of a man, covered in foil sheeting, was shown lying nearby.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said it was suspected that fatigue played a role in the crash because the registration plates showed the truck was from Cape Town.

“The truck overturned, the cab came off and went down the embankment. There was one fatality,” Netcare911’s Santi Steinmann told News24.

Another vehicle drove into the truck but the driver appeared unharmed, she said.

Motorists were warned of heavy delays and to avoid the area. Three lanes were closed, said Mokheseng. He said the truck was expected to be cleared by about 08:00 and the lanes would be re-opened.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
