Bekkersdal tensions simmer around vote

2014-05-13 08:41

Residents of Bekkersdal, an area beset with violence in recent months, put tensions on ice for the vote.WATCH

Johannesburg - The first three projects of a turn-around plan in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, would be launched on Saturday, Gauteng housing MEC Jacob Mamabolo's office said.

"The township was declared a hot-spot and most public facilities were torched during the 2014 pre-election protest actions over service delivery and demands for the disbandment of the municipality," his office said.

The Bekkersdal Service Delivery Improvement Plan would upgrade infrastructure, and improve social and economic conditions.

The first three projects to be launched on Saturday were a sewer network upgrade, a high impact cleaning campaign and a secondary school. The sewer upgrade alone would cost over R300m.

According to the department, the pre-election protests in Bekkersdal caused around R20m in damages.

This included the destruction of the community hall, gymnasium, council offices, business hub, clinic, local business training centre and farmer support centre.
