Bert le Clos settles assault case

2012-09-07 07:47

Johannesburg - The father of Olympic star Clad Le Clos has paid R18 000 to settle an assault case, The Star newspaper reported on Friday.

Bert le Clos had to pay damages and legal fees because of an assault at a bar in April 2010. The person allegedly assaulted was Durban chemist Richard Simpson.

The case was meant to be heard at the Pinetown Civil Court on Thursday but Simpson's attorney, Craig Preston-Whyte said the matter had been settled.

Criminal charges were laid against Le Clos but he was not convicted and Simpson filed a civil suit and obtained a default judgment against him last December.

Le Clos told the court he could not pay as he was unemployed and had no money of his own, according to the newspaper.
A warrant of execution was then obtained against his property, but Le Clos did not own any.

      marlin.samuels.1 - 2012-09-07 08:35

darryn this incident happened in 2010 already,

      jerry.medina.756 - 2012-09-07 20:21

But then I'll make news if I have coffee with Malema. You will even know how much I paid for that coffee right?

      Flemstone - 2012-09-08 09:58

Well Nicholas the British media gave him plenty of coverage when he was over here. Do you have a problem with that aswell?

  • npretorius2 - 2012-09-07 08:01

How is this not slander? This is a new low for news24. 100's of people are assaulted everyday, some of which are convicted. This is not even a criminal matter.

      michelle.h.koekemoer - 2012-09-07 08:06

      The price of fame??

  • greig.saunders - 2012-09-07 08:02

    Pathetic News24, really!

  • charmaine.wolmarans.1 - 2012-09-07 08:03

Nobody whould have know about this incident but because chad got gold now his families privacy is invaded. Sometimes reporters don't know what to write about. Wonder how many skeletons are in your family closet. Really. Publish someting newsworthy not gossip

      christopher.m.lowe - 2012-09-07 09:17

When Bert le Clos chose to make himself an international public figure at the Olympics, he (perhaps unknowingly) gave up his right to be a private citizen. You can't have it both ways. Sad for Chad and his mom, having a violent figure like this in their lives, but live by the sword, die by the sword.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-09-07 12:29

curriemafia, nowhere does it say anyone was drunk, in Durban you know full well bars are also restaurants and families gather there with their children. Stop being a putty pusher for one day please.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-09-07 14:06

What's this crap that once you make a public appearance that you lose the right to privacy?? What a pathetic mindset.

      aeon.lamour - 2012-09-07 16:07

Oh Christopher.. You don't know what happened that day he beat the guy. Neither do any of us. Did the other guy perhaps insult his wife or children?? Who knows. Stop being such a whiny b!tch

  • katie.d.binge - 2012-09-07 08:33

News24 this is a weak article and as a supporter of your brand I am disgusted that you would sink to such levels. Media has become a sensationalist cancer. You should act more credibly if you want respect from your audience.

  • marlin.samuels.1 - 2012-09-07 08:34

chad paid it on his behalf, his olympic money is available

  • leanne.rodney.3 - 2012-09-07 08:39

Disgusting News 24 - really, what do you get paid for - if you cannot do this job with integrity and respect then go and find a new one – oh sorry, I was mistaken, these are qualities some journalists do not posses!!!!

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-09-07 08:39

  • gvangreunen - 2012-09-07 08:43

In the words of Bert ... "It's unbelievable!" Unbelievable, that News24 think that this is newsworthy!!!

  • katie.d.binge - 2012-09-07 08:45

It's lame to say news24 is just the messenger and that the star reported it first. As a brand news24 are seen as a corporate citizen- a brand is viewed as a person in law. Therefore choice and discretion as well as credibility come into play here.

      Msika - 2012-09-07 14:05

      Don't kill the messenger!!

  • matthew.swanepoel.9 - 2012-09-07 08:45

  • cathy.vanvollenstee - 2012-09-07 08:46

Shame on your for this sensationalist reporting! You are not a celbe mag and this is embarrassing for the whole family. Why the need to publish this?

  • julie.j.vanrensburg - 2012-09-07 08:46

Unfortunately is is a fact that the more sensational the news, the more newspapers are sold, and this is but one example of creating sensationalism - not only because of the person involved, but to show the world what "bad" people whites are - anything to run whites down at every opportunity. And no, I have never said or thought that whites are "all good' and blacks 'all bad' but anyone with eyes in their heads can see who does more crime - whether here, or in the USA or elsewhere... Every race has the "good, the bad and the ugly" amongst its members, but some more than others... and here it is VERY obvious...

  • bonita.shawnewland - 2012-09-07 09:00

To every media company that published this story, shame on you. Do you know how much parents pay out of their own pockets to get their children to high-performance levels? Coaching fees, kit, local and international travel expenses etc. Why don't you be more constructive and do a story on that?

  • rishaal.sewpaul - 2012-09-07 09:01

Bert the oak proberly deserved.Happened so long ago this is a joke News 24.

  • Mark - 2012-09-07 10:16

Shame on all you idiots who are calling for News24 not to publish newsworthy items. If Le Clos was an MP or an ANC supporter you would all be calling him an idiot for this apparent assault. If you become famous and have a few skeletons in the closet that door will be opened sooner or later.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-09-07 11:53

For what purpose Mark? THAT is the question YOU should be asking yourself.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-09-07 14:09

And your stupidity is well documented as well.

  • nikki.alliskirkby - 2012-09-07 11:10

    Such bad journalism! Gosh!

  • otto.vorster - 2012-09-07 12:41

I dare News24 to post the following vote. Should the Bert Le Clos story have been published: 1) No, it is cheap sensationalism. 2) Yes, it is in public interest. 3) Sorry, we wish we hadn't.

  • carolyn.leclos - 2012-09-07 15:25

How desperate for news are you people? Seriously and utterly pathetic. So much happening in this country and you choose to try hang a cloud of darkness over the glory of a young champion who has put South Africa in the eye of the world. Not only do you do that, you feel its not enough, you publicise the families very personal situation. Such poor taste, no discretion. Pathetic, utterly pathetic. You surely cannot be morally proud of narrow minded self.

      charmaine.paterson1 - 2012-09-08 13:16

I think most of us are disgusted by the publishing of this article. Many arguments / assaults take place all over the country every day and they don't make the news. Cheap sensationalism. Almost as cheap as the pharmacist who couldn't wait to grab his share....

  • jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-09-07 16:07

Not that I agree with the journalism but this article is hilarious, reason, there was this big hoohaa about how great this guy is and how calm, funny and relaxed he is and how he reminds everyone so much about their own dads and now this comes out. I'm not judging and I don't know what the reason was but the fact that it happened at a bar doesn't really help his case! Hope this man sues N24 tho!

  • chris.fuffie - 2012-09-07 21:45
