Biker clocked at 234km/h

2012-08-26 19:47

Johannesburg - A 33-year-old man has been arrested for driving at 234km/h on the R21 near Nellmapuis on Sunday, Gauteng traffic police said.

Busaphi Nxumalo, spokesperson for the traffic police, said the man was arrested just before 11:00 on the offramp outside Pretoria driving a motorbike.

"He was travelling with his girlfriend on a Kawasaki.

"He claimed that he was rushing to his mother in Pretoria, who he said had had a panic attack," said Nxumalo.

The man was charged with reckless and negligent driving with an alternative charge of exceeding the general speed limit of 120km/h, Nxumalo said.

He was released on R1 000 bail and would appear in the Lyttleton Magistrate's Court soon.

    Think bike,I love it!

      Squeegee - 2012-08-26 20:45

Gross stupidity - I mean the biker and the comment.

      james.rossouw - 2012-08-26 21:32

And the Germans go 350 Kph. Time for the weenies here to get a grip.

      angela.monaghansandells - 2012-08-26 21:36

There are no mad minibus taxi drivers in Germany that will pull out right in front of you.

      deabreu - 2012-08-27 07:20

Last week traffic blocked fro hours in Pretoria at Menlyn, Gardfontein, highway bridge N1 South? Anyone heard about that? It did not even make the news! BLUE LIGHT BULLIES ACCIDENT! Not a single word even though traffic was blocked off for more than an hour dueing morning peak hour traffic.

  • JackmanCJ - 2012-08-26 20:16

Bike needs to think car .... Much slower... And may contain a family or part thereof. WTF Lock him up.

      robin.stobbs.9 - 2012-08-26 21:41

Throw the book at the idiot. This behaviour is insane.

  • Sharon - 2012-08-26 20:22

Did he have a number plate or was that also missing?

  • hendrikvs - 2012-08-26 20:39

Bribe did not work this time?

  • angela.monaghansandells - 2012-08-26 20:41

What a nutter!! I had a wonderful bike ride today with my hubby and our bike club \family\. Slow down...take in the scenery!! Relax and enjoy the ride! This guy doesn't care much about his girlfriend - or others on the road!!

      Squeegee - 2012-08-26 20:47

I agree Angela. Enjoy your bike. I just hate the incredible selfishness of these maniacs.

      angela.monaghansandells - 2012-08-26 21:04

People like this give bikers a bad name unfortunately. Most people break the speed limit at some time but why tempt fate? The majority of kids with scooters and bikes need to learn a thing or two as well. I've seen girls riding scooters with strappy vests, shorts and NO SHOES!!!

      angela.monaghansandells - 2012-08-27 11:44

Of course it matters what you wear. Countless kids having skin grafts will disagree with you. I know of a kid who came off his scooter in town and lost his arm. Bike or scooter - what's the difference? If you get hit and come off you certainly stand more of a chance if you are wearing the correct protective gear. Personally I think scooters are more dangerous due to their lack of power. As for the high heels, that's your personal preference and I respect your right to wear what you like. I wouldn't do it. I'm sure the biker who got caught speeding wasn't wearing shorts and flip flops!

  • Tiaan Liebenberg - 2012-08-26 21:00

The Think Bike campaign is a farce! Motorists have to constantly think FOR bikers as the bikers are too stupid to think for themselves and the consequences of their stupidity

      don.haynessmart - 2012-08-26 21:15

I think comments like this are even more farcical. There are lots of stupid people out there and yes, some are bikers. The campaign is about trying to make the roads safer for bikes & cars. Why not visit the Think Bike website and see what its stands for.

      pagel.trivia - 2012-08-26 22:39

@Angela: You obviously are - but when I see the bikers in morning traffic I have to disagree with you about the majority statement.

      sean.james.7927 - 2012-08-26 22:48

I've seen more stupid Citi Golf drivers than bikers!

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-27 04:06

@tiaan you regularly see car drivers been caught doing those speeds as well. I would rather see a sober and able rider at 234 km/h than a drunk on the road at 40 km/h

      jeremy002 - 2012-08-27 05:04

Like that. Car drivers have to think FOR these bikers. Good one.

      hamish.drake1 - 2012-08-27 07:48

As a responsible biker, that is the dumbest comment I have seen here

      travis.vermaak - 2012-08-27 11:41

A stupid and obviously biased comment

  • jody.beggs - 2012-08-26 21:06

You actually have to ride a super bike to understand this. On a bike you make a mistake you die , a car makes a mistake you die , you lives are literally in your hands. I've seen many accidents where bikers riding the speed limit with cars being taken out because the aren't seen. The only option is to use your speed to keep away from cars. 243 KM/h is fast but on a big bike it take 9 seconds to get to that speed. On my R6 , 200km/h in 8 seconds and that's a small 600 cc. He was arrested and locked up when no-one was hurt , but when a kid was brain damaged the driver of the blue light car was not arrested or charged until month's later. Why are some people more equal than others ? We need to stand together and fight the government, equal treatment for all , no BEE or AA. We build the rainbow nation together as equals. No criminals in government posts none , and we all join a TAX union to withhold taxes until changes are made.... Damn the man.

      vessela.hobson - 2012-08-26 21:12

he was arrested because he was speeding, you don't wait for someone to kill himself before you arrest him, people who speed deserve this!

      angela.monaghansandells - 2012-08-26 21:23

He'd have been arrested if he did that speed in a car. That's the law. If you break it and you get caught - you pay! Regardless of whether you feel safe or not.

      om.nom.nom.01 - 2012-08-26 21:45

Bet you it does not take 9 seconds to go from 243 km/h - 0. Whatever time it takes actually does not matter coz you & whoever you hit will be dead.

      sean.james.7927 - 2012-08-26 22:50

  • Theresa Rich - 2012-08-26 21:07

I would have a panic attack too if my son drove a bike at such a breakneck speed. Irresponsible too doing it with a passenger. Ridiculous excuse...

  • rvbrink - 2012-08-26 21:22

I think he should get a panic attack now!!!

  • heinrich.fillis - 2012-08-26 22:09

Good speed but not for the road especially during the day

  • lynda.pitcher.1 - 2012-08-26 22:24

and if he'd died we would have all been made to feel guilty about not looking out for bikers

  • sean.james.7927 - 2012-08-26 22:45

Love the journalistic license! You ride a bike and drive a car. Still, stupid on the part of the biker for getting caught.

  • jeremy002 - 2012-08-27 05:02

Think bike, think huge fine. Looks like the huge fines are not working. The authorities need to look at jail terms plus bike and licence confiscation, long-term.

      arm.witmens - 2012-08-27 08:15

yes, and old f*rts should only be allowed to drive on sundays...between 10 and 11

      Rudolf - 2012-08-27 11:33

BRAVO! Witmens, briljant!! Kry oumense, en dom vrouens in Mercedes' van die pad af en ons is onmiddelik 20% veiliger. 15% moroone sonder flikkers en die res (%) is taxi's...

      jeremy002 - 2012-08-27 12:37

@Rudolf, armwitmens etc. ALL my comments here are only about the irresponsible bikers that give the other bikers a bad name. Maybe there should be some self regulating then? Seems like nothing else is working. I wonder if any of the bikers that get annoyed at my and other comments here are the same sort of folk who get annoyed when the taxis and inconsiderate car drivers are lawless, but when it comes closer to home, then going at a breakneck speed on a superbike is ok, and not lawless? Just asking.

  • zaks2217 - 2012-08-27 06:50

What a lucky guy, people pay big bucks for thrills like this. He got away with R1000.

  • trevor.bush.9655 - 2012-08-27 07:09

Well, it would seem he was only in 2nd or 3rd at most, imagine if he hit 6th. People a witchhunt going on here with all these "burn at the stake" comments, the guy is off to court let the justice system deal with him. A his exucse was lame...they should have hit him with another fine for making such a lames ass statement, just say you like to speed and put the cuffs on.

Destroy the bike and hang the criminal high.

  • fred.potgieter.92 - 2012-08-27 07:55

I will gladly pay toll fees to drive on a proper Autobahn. We have enough wide open spaces in our country, and most new vehicles are quite safe to drive at high speeds if conditions allow it.

  • - 2012-08-27 08:09

Short story: Double lane road in residential area. Motor vehicle overtakes young motorcyclist. Both are speeding. Motorcyclist speeds up and edges to motor car trying to dislodge drivers rear-view mirror. Driver does not particularly want his mirror broken off so edges toward the right. The smoke from the bikes' rear wheel locked under breaking was spectacular. Had the motorcyclist become unstuck I would have become blind

My word you are a bunch of moaning myrtles! I did 288 the other day... LOVED IT! No better feeling in the world. You just have to choose your roads, doing the R21 wasn't very clever my friend... :)

      vessela.hobson - 2012-08-27 09:19

      just kill yourself then

      Rudolf - 2012-08-27 11:40

Yip, choose your roads wisely.... 220+ isn't even a thrill for me anymore. But seeing a flat-face with a uber-dumpf expression standing behind some electronic device when you shoot past at 200+ is PRICELESS!!

  • mlungukalo.brakes - 2012-08-27 09:10

Idiot Biker!! and @ Xolile& Tiaan Liebenberg, Who mentioned "Think Bike" He was a motorcyclist!!!!! Had he been in a car, would you two have been slating Think Car?? and DTM, no matter how fast your bike gets from 0-100, there is a speed limit, and ANY BOX who goes out and breaks both the speed limit and the law, deserves to be punished!

  • Barryboots - 2012-08-27 09:42

Think bike, think car? How about just think! Road riders, come to the track top let off steam, it is fun. I get all my thrills at the tracks during organised track days/schools where there are all the facilities to go fast in relative safety and enjoy the bike's performance.

      Barryboots - 2012-08-27 14:07

      Sorry, "to let off steam"

  • Hemlock - 2012-08-27 09:53

  • dhavandran.palavar - 2012-08-27 09:54

plain stupidity. use the race tracks on the weekends.

  • Blixum - 2012-08-27 10:05

Why pay toll for these dangerous roads constantly blocked by traffic jams during the week and used as racing tracks over weekends?

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-08-27 10:51

aaahhhh....sometimes the devil just makes you gooooooooo......didnt think that bike could do that speed with two on board ? just saying... <3

  • pvuuren - 2012-08-27 13:23

how does any one get caught at 234KPH???? he should be locked up for stupidity and neutered , why stop if you can be hidden in the menlyn mall parking garage within 10 minutes? the Speedcop-chopper cannot react in 10 minutes time and bikes cannot be caught with a car, having a registration plate on the bike while doing that speed, ergo locked up for stupidity and neutered, sothat stupid seeds cant spread...
