Cape Town - A man was killed when he lost control of his motorbike and crashed into side barriers in Meiringspoort on Wednesday, Western Cape police said.

"The driver of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle allegedly lost control of the bike when entering the Double Drift's bend while he and other bikers were travelling in the direction of de Rust," said Captain Malcolm Potjie.

The 49-year-old man was apparently thrown off his bike on impact and landed in a shallow river next to the road.

He died on the scene.
