Black girl turned away from trials

2012-05-09 10:00

Rustenburg - A 17-year-old Brits schoolgirl claims she was turned away from hockey trials in Rustenburg because she is black, The Times reported on Wednesday.

Rego Modise, a Grade 11 pupil at Wagpos Horskool said she persuaded her parents to drive her to Hoërskool Grenswag for Bokkie Week trials after getting approval from her coach.

She registered and paid a R30 fee, but was later told the trials were for white pupils only.

"I told him I was sent by my coach. He then asked me: 'Didn't they tell you anything else?' and I said no. Then he told me that Bokkie Week was for white kids only," she said.

Neither her coach Louis Koen nor Wagpos principal Daan Neethling could be reached for comment, but Rev Peter Stans, CEO of Afrikaner Volkseie Sport, the organisers of Bokkie Week, said Modise had "definitely" not been invited for the trials, which were by invitation only. He said the week was for "Afrikaner" children only.

No player of a different race had ever attended Bokkie Week, Stans said.

this isn't going to go down well...

      Russki - 2012-05-09 10:10

"Bokkie Week was for white kids only" - this sort of discrimination is very wrong, and in my opinion black people are not exempt from this. We also see this in the form of the "Black Journalist Association" and the "Black Management Forum" and the "Black Accountants Association"... I hope I got the names right, but you get the idea. Whether it comes from black or white people, excluding any other races from your gatherings is wrong.

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-05-09 10:16

I hope this isn't another person pulling the race card because they are all bitter and twisted. Was she really turned away because she was black, or because she doesn't know how to play hockey?

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-09 10:21

Unbelievable that this BS is still going on in RSA. Do these Mollusc even know we are a democracy.......Foie tog. Get a brain ....some people are just not worthy to be called RSA citizens.

      Bonjo - 2012-05-09 10:21

Jeepers we as South Africans are so obsessed with race! I have a solution, let's all mix and have coloured babies, then no one will be turned away for either being white or black coz they'll have half of each :-)

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:23

Shouldn't go down any worse than BEE and Affirmative Action really, its the same thing, but i guess it would go down worse because now its white people doing it, so that makes it immoral all of a sudden

      Lorain - 2012-05-09 10:39

@ Tamaranui-You cant believe it? black people who cannot believe that whites act the way they do are worse than the racists, where on earth have you been living? clearly not in SA.

      Msika - 2012-05-09 10:40

Screw Stans, screw Hockey in SA. The 17 year old must just forget about this whites only sport. They are always performing poor in the olympics anyway, reason being they only have the manority of the country supporting them.

      Sean - 2012-05-09 10:40

I`m not saying that what happend is right , but now please tell me what is the diff between this and the following scenario ? My brother is highly qualified in his field , he went for a job interview and the boss honestly told him `` you are the perfect candidate for the job , but we can`t take you , YOU ARE WHITE`` This is all f@cked up !!

      Bryan - 2012-05-09 10:41

@Russki ZA... Discrimination in any shape or form is wrong.. I must agree wholeheartedly.., however, with regard to your point on 'Black journalists asscociation, editors forum, accountants etc..'why is that acceptable because it has the word'Black'in front of it? Or should I ask why it is acceptable to some??

      Surfing - 2012-05-09 10:56

I am not allowed to register at some black organisations. Msika, I think they are doing better than the SA soccer team

      mastersvoice - 2012-05-09 10:58

One of our constitutional rights is freedom of association. If a Christian organisation holds trials for inclusion in a choir, would we be offended if Muslims are not invited or if atheists were turned away at the door? If a non-Afrikaner wants to be included in an Afrikaner cultural event, why is it a big deal if she is turned away? I think it is time we stopped jumping on the race bandwagon every time someone says "whites only", and start understanding what freedom of association really means. I think this girl was given incorrect information about the trial, and I also understand that it led to an embarrassing situation for both parties. "Afrikaner Volkseie Sport" is quite obviously a Afrikaner-only organisation, and if you don't like it, learn to live with it.

      Nigel - 2012-05-09 10:58

@ rooster well said, I think you sum up the situation perfectly, The BEE\AA, Black economic forums, Black account forums, black entrepreneurial forums is all blatantly racist. Black people (not all - but in general) need to stop being hypocrites and admit that Black racism & discrimination is far worse than the occasional white racist incident, Black racism is institutionalized & legalized, just like Aparthied was, there is a big difference between occasional individual outbursts & political leaders strategically & publicly undermining minority races.

Peter-Peter - 2012-05-09 11:27 ****BE WARNED**** This video will shock you...white and black people. Its a video of a black priest, having a go at his own people

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:28

@Tamaranui: do you've got a problem with the Black Business Forum?

      grant.hide - 2012-05-09 11:43

How can it go down well?, but going down it is. It's a cultural thing, either they respect each other or you know what happens, its been repeated here since the 1600s. :D

      Rvn - 2012-05-09 11:50

Where is the headline " White man turned away from job" so now he cant feed his family because of BEE?

      Gustav - 2012-05-09 11:52

I just want to say that I can write a 1000 article's like this every day, well it will be almost the same... "white man turned away from job" so whats the fuss about....

      Bryan - 2012-05-09 12:01

@Peter-peter.. Shocking indeed but at least he speaks the truth.. And I say that respectfully...

      Zambezi - 2012-05-09 12:12

but Rev Peter Stans, CEO of Afrikaner Volkseie Sport, the organisers of Bokkie Week, said Modise had "definitely" not been invited for the trials, which were by invitation only. He said the week was for "Afrikaner" children only. THIS OKE SHUD SERIOUSLY QUESTION HIS FAITH..... but then again he does come the 'chosen' race !

      Vlad - 2012-05-09 12:12

      Gustav - 2012-05-09 12:46

"He said the week was for "Afrikaner" children only." Enough said!!! If you dont get or understand this then you should probably go back to grade 0.

  • Matthew - 2012-05-09 10:04

That is the problem now with all these charges of racism being thrown around. It detracts from genuine cases of racism, and in the end no-one knows which is genuine racism, and which is just crying 'ressist' as an excuse for, well anything.

      Gregory - 2012-05-09 10:08

This is blatant racism if the comment that no other races had ever attended is factual! No getting around that. Racism needs to die, seriously!

      Grant - 2012-05-09 10:27

Racism will never die. Furthermore, it will continue to be FUELLED until such time as the rules are the same for all involved. If Suncoast International can make it policy to employ NO MORE white people, and to tell current employees that they WILL NOT progress any further because they are white... If struggling, but hard-working white kids cant apply for bursaries because of their colour... if black people cannot be charged with racism... then the anger and the divide will just grow and grow.

      Jason - 2012-05-09 10:33

@grantcallaway I agree, the problem with the whole system is that young white kids feel they need to go overseas or open up there own business to make it and blacks who gets jobs end up thinking am I here because I deserve to be here... So it ends up damaging both sides.

      William - 2012-05-09 10:53

The sins of the father shall be revisited on the sons. WHat a sad lot us South Africans are. It's probably better for young White kids to go overseas, they can learn that they are not special & it's tough out there in the real world. I think the problem White South Africans are having is the same as the problem Europe is having...to0 used to living off the proceeds of colonialism/Apartheid and not geared to be competitive in the real world, where the rules are not slanted in their favour. Every one expecting to live the way their fathers did. But that is not the world we live in today. There is still a place for White people in SA, but it's going to be tough going...accept it & stop crying about how unfair it all is. Our fathers didn't mind it too much when the shoe was on the other foot. Now we have to suffer the consequences...those are the laws of nature.

  • Peter - 2012-05-09 10:07

It's time for Bokkie week to recognise the new South Africa, this also goes to all black groups that discriminate other races. I doubt if this is extreme racism, just the rules.

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:15

The "rules" don't allow for the participation of other children based on their skin colour, so yes, it's extreme racism.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:21

@Moi - So if that makes this extreme racism then what does that make BEE and AC? ultra huge massive racism i guess

      Grant - 2012-05-09 10:29

@Moi - did you read the first sentence of Peter's comment?

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:31

I do feel that BEE and AA are also a form of racism. So? 2 wrongs don't make a right. If we can't get rid of it at school level, what are the chances of getting rid of it anywhere else?

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:47

@grant - yes. Did you read his last sentence? Then you would know that my response is to that sentence.

      Grant - 2012-05-09 10:51

@Moi - have you perhaps considered that if the GOVERNMENT of a COUNTRY can make "rules" that deem outright and blatant racism "okay", that it might have an effect on its' citizens? No - two wrongs certainly dont make a right, but the wrong of the government which effects millions of people is a whole lot BIGGER than the wrong of a hockey club and its effect on one person. You dont torch an entire village and then point fingers at a kid who's playing with matches!

      Shaun - 2012-05-09 11:00

Actually two wrongs can make a right, its maths... Double negative makes a positive....

      Grant - 2012-05-09 11:08

@shaun - I'm pretty good with maths - here's a few quick lessons: A negative plus a negative still gives a negative! :) If you insist on using multiplication though, two negatives will in fact give a positive, however any WRONG answer multiplied with another WRONG answer certainly wont give a correct result :) Aah, the lovey maths metaphors...

      Carla - 2012-05-09 11:14

@Grant - I agree with you, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's wrong to not allow a child to partake in a sports event because she doesn't conform to the racial profiling. If the citizens of a country persist in having racially exclusive events, then how can we ever expect the government to change?

      Stephan - 2012-05-09 12:36

What if a girl wants to sing in the Drakensberg se seuns koor ... ?

  • clinton.badenhorst - 2012-05-09 10:08

Keep tradition, tradition! If this is a Afrikaners event, then stay away! You have taken away enough of our culture already! Lets please keep whatever we still have left!

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:15

You have strange way of looking into pressing issues. You sound unstable.

      clinton.badenhorst - 2012-05-09 10:29

@ Tamaranui - I can ask the blacks the same thing! You already got what you wanted! BEE AA etc etc. For 18 years already... Street name changes and so forth and so forth! Why can't you just leave what little the white man has left ALONE! This government has been raping the white man to a point where fleeing the country is the only option! FFS Just leave our culture and activities ALONE! We do not barge onto your fields and demand that we be included in your soccer teams!

      Lorain - 2012-05-09 10:40

@ Pythagoras You've threatening to leave SA for a while how come you still here?

      Wimpie.Haefele - 2012-05-09 10:41

To be honest they say Bokkie week is by invitation only. So if I show up at the BMF they have to let me attend else they are rasist?

      Gareth - 2012-05-09 10:41

FFS its called Bokkie Week trials.....

      Ismail - 2012-05-09 10:52

If the White man cant accept the fact that this is Africa , then he must go to some place where a white man have the peace of being a white man ... with his white ideologies ... Australia, maybe even Russia, you dont get blacks there with all the white snow or even that Island in Norway where people who believe in racial diversity get shot by a psycho ...

      Lorain - 2012-05-09 11:24

@ ismail.lunat.35 Amen to that my brother,I couldnt have said it better myself. Why if you are so bothered by the existance of Africans do you still live in Africa? Why torture yourself?

      Themba - 2012-05-09 11:51

Neem jou ossewa and trek Orania toe boet where you can keep whatever is left of your apartheid without anyone grieving you grief. AA includes white women because during apartheid they were also discriminated, and BEE includes white companies that form partnerships with black companies.

      Bomb - 2012-05-09 12:33

If I, as an Afrikaner, arrange a braai, and invite Afrikaners with the intention of promoting and maintaining my culture and enjoy Afrikaner traditions, why would anyone who is not an Afrikaner wanna "insist" to also attend? Every culture and race have the right of free association, and every race/culture should be allowed to engage in race/culture specific activities. There is nothing wrong with that. I have absolutely no desire or intention to force myself into someone else's environment or activities. I'm not interested in the "Reed Dance" or traditional initiations, or cow slaughtering ceremonies or traditional healers, not because I'm a racist, cause I respect every culture and race's need to express their beliefs, but because its not my culture or tradition, simple. If an event is on "INVITATION ONLY", for whatever reason, why would you show up if you are not invited and cry like a baby when you are shown away. There are more than enough opportunities to mix and share across racial divides, and cultural and traditional differences should be respected and supported.

  • Cannabinoid - 2012-05-09 10:09

Racism is how the governments put fear and hatred into South Africans. It's their way of controlling us just like terrorism is used in the USA and UK. Look at the majority of articles on news24 and you can figure the rest out

      Tuco - 2012-05-09 10:19

They have to have some way of dividing and conqoring, in the US its terror in SA its race. Its almost as if they have scouts all over the country searching for race based stories to shock us with. The ANC has found ways to gain from race based tactics just like the NATs did. very little has changed.

      Lorain - 2012-05-09 11:30

@ Tuco If it's a tactic by the ANC to make sure that the races continue to distrust each other, let's say for instance they are doing it in order for black people to feel that it's better to stick with the devil we know, then go back under white rule coz clearly white people will never change, how then do they control the bile spewed by whites on this forum? Or maybe the whites on this forum are secret agents of the government whose task is to continually remind us what life would be under white rule and hence to never make the mistake of voting for the DA? Is that what it is? I think not.

  • Gregory - 2012-05-09 10:09

Time for bokkie week to shut down. No room for such blatant racism.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:16

What you meant to say was Time for Affrimative action and BEE to shut down. No room for such blatant racism.

      Manford - 2012-05-09 10:24

these things like bokkie etc must be eradicated once and for all, but look its not going well with blacks who are always on the receiving end

  • Russki - 2012-05-09 10:10

"Bokkie Week was for white kids only" - this sort of discrimination is very wrong, and in my opinion black people are not exempt from this. We also see this in the form of the "Black Journalist Association" and the "Black Management Forum" and the "Black Accountants Association"... I hope I got the names right, but you get the idea. Whether it comes from black or white people, excluding any other races from your gatherings is wrong.

      Themba - 2012-05-09 11:53

Russki take some time to study the constitutions of those organisations and you will be able to see that they are not racially exclusive. Perhaps their names are wrong and misleading, but any person can be a member regardless of their race.

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 13:21

@Themba; It will be the same as telling the girl she can attend but only as a spectator.

  • Geoff - 2012-05-09 10:11

When are these Dutchies going to stop and smell the roses and they wonder why white males over 40 can't get jobs, or why blacks get preference at universities!!!! Dorf brains

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:15

white males over 40 can't get jobs, or why blacks get preference at universities because the goverment put in place BEE and Affirmative action...

      clinton.badenhorst - 2012-05-09 10:17

When are these Brits going to realise that they are white too! you back stabbing derp!

      Baai - 2012-05-09 10:29

shame Geoff. they smell the roses thats why they dont want to let that girl play hockey with them. When do white boer boys get invited to Xhosa-only cultural events mmm? Its about culture not race, and this girl going there was intentional to provoke this to further throw a bad light on afrikaners and disallow them a private culture.

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:48

When did hockey become a cultural thing?

  • nkadimeng - 2012-05-09 10:12

A racist Reverent organising a racist event.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:14

And Affirmative Action doesn't add to the racism?

      Baai - 2012-05-09 10:31

its not racist anything, nkadimeng. White boer boys don't go to Xhosa initiation rituals. You have to respect each others culture. or would you let a white boer boy go into a Xhosa initiation as Xhosa initiate if the sangoma / priest / whoever doesn't allow it no! Because its culture. That girl went there on purpose to try and make white people look bad. Let themkeep their culture. This is a shame, like using white people for TOILET PAPER...

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:33

@Nkadimeng, and how many whites were allowed to join the Black Business Forum?

      nkadimeng - 2012-05-09 11:58

@Peter, by merely not understanding principle of affirmative action that tells me a lot about you. South African history means f*ck all to you. skin colour is of utmost important to you. @Baai, i have been under the impression that through sports we can conquer things like segregation based on colour, clearly in this case sports is being used for the opposite. And as for White boer going to initiation ritual, if your memory still serves you well, there a has been a white boer boy that went for it. Initiations are open for everyone. And ever wondered why we have so many White swimmers in SA? It not because Blacks are scared of water. @Marven, I do not know.

      Merven - 2012-05-09 12:18

You know well, none, because whites are not allowed.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 12:25

@nkadimeng - So whats the principle of Affirmative action? Im 23 i had nothing to do with apartheid, yet i must now suffer? For what others did? Explain to me what i dont understand about south african history? I took history till martic and got a B on higher grade please explain what i've missed?

  • Peter - 2012-05-09 10:13

Wait why is that a problem? I'm pretty sure Affirmative Action has forced out alot of other races from sports when they should have been choosen by their level of skill. So the coin has flipped and now its a problem?

  • Eva - 2012-05-09 10:13

While I don’t condone this at all, why is no one ever making a noise about students being turned away from Medical or Veterinary studies because they’re white? Or BEE?

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:19

My point exactly, white people and indians are the only people that can be racist apparently

  • georgebrightons - 2012-05-09 10:16

What is this? Do you think blacks can DA? Sports for Whites only in a democratical SA. ANC will rule until Jesus comes back.

      Baai - 2012-05-09 10:33

So georgebrightons you think white boys should be allowed in initiation rights to become Xhosa men? Its not about race its about culture. That girl was sent there on purpose to disallow afrikaners their own culture. Its a shame your using white people for toilet paper.

      Lynton - 2012-05-09 10:47

He better come back fast or the ANC won't have much to rule!

  • Manford - 2012-05-09 10:18

people can say whatever they want some white people will never change ,no matter how preached the race thing is done , one day a black child will be in action and its gonna be too late for a white person to correct their sins, believe it or not, another mugabe is gonna rise, watch the space.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:26

Have you heard of the name Julius Malema?

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:49

Some white people will never change, yes, and some black people will never change either. It works both ways Manford.

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:35

Cool Manford, maybe you can explain the Black Business Forum and the exclusion of whites?

  • Tamaranui - 2012-05-09 10:19

Unbelievable that this BS is still going on in RSA.

      Nigel - 2012-05-09 10:47

yup its unbelievable, so is the behavior of ANC people like Jimmy Manyi & Malema, its a disease perpetuated by the leadership of this country to hide their inability to govern.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:29

@Thembane.wa.Mahlaza totally agree, pointing fingers and blaming one race or another because people are feeling hard done by does not fix the government, slow the crime rate, increase service delivery or help us make south africa a better place

Now what if it was for black disadvantage kids only?...Double standards black people! You cant have you're bread buttered on both sides.

  • ShottaZee - 2012-05-09 10:21

I said this yesterday and I was called names. Transformation is needed in hockey. We can't have a team which is 99% white claiming to represent the rainbow nation!

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:27

Sports teams must be made up of the best possible players, regardless their race.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 10:27

Why the hell does it matter what color your skin is? Skill is all that matters that's what sport is about skill

      ShottaZee - 2012-05-09 10:31

Moi and Peter in an ideal society like America yes, but this is South Africa dudes. Maybe in 50yrs time we can apply your theory.

      Blaine - 2012-05-09 10:47

That's the problem with this rainbow Nations sports. Teams get politically forced to make up teams of color, and not merit. Look at our national teams! Proteas have never won a World Cup, Hockey barely qualifies for Olympics, Bafana can't even make the Afcon or World Cup. Rugby is up and down with the kwota system! If a white player is better, why should they make space for a black kwota?

      hw.dejager - 2012-05-09 10:48

@ShottaZee. Well this implies that Bafana Bafana also has to represent the rainbow nation...but it doesn't...I agree with Moi that all national teams need to be picked on merit...I don't care if you are black, white, pink or purple...

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:51

America...Ideal society???? You seem to be living in an alternate universe.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 11:04

@ShottaZee so its better to be racist for 50years than try to create a society built on ones skills where people are rewarded for hard work.... I'm sorry but thats exactly why south africa is the way it is right now

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:37

ShottaZee, this Bokkie weekend is not for the national team. It was created for children being victims of the AA in sports.

  • neil.kroese - 2012-05-09 10:21

Really, what did she expect will happen when she tries to crash the party of a bunch of fringe lunatics playing? Just another attempt to stereotype all whites, and Afrikaans speaking people as racist oafs...I am so bored with type of feeble attempts..maybe I should apply to join the "The Black Business Council" and see how welcome I'd be there.....oh yes I forgot... discrimination is only frowned upon in South Africa when it originates from white communities.

  • Michael - 2012-05-09 10:23

"Black Journalist Association" and the "Black Management Forum" and the "Black Accountants Association"... To Bee or to Bee ee ee that is the question.

  • Giggy - 2012-05-09 10:25

So what? The blacks have their blacks only events (no whites allowed). I'm turned away for jobs because I'm white. Just change the actual words slightly to suit the need, and "viola" they cry racism. It must be the most used word in the world.

      Gregory - 2012-05-09 10:29

Giggy, you are a dick, in a country where we want to promote racial harmony, which is in all our best interests, we should have no time for people or issues such that this. That should apply to both sides of the divide. I hear the BEE issues etc etc, but does two wrongs make a right?

      Giggy - 2012-05-09 11:08

@Gregory, I don't pretend, I don't suck up and don't sit on a fence, however, I believe in live and let live. It's propaganda harming the harmony in our country. Oh by the way I looked and yup I'm still a woman and have no dick.

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:39

True Gregory, but we don't see you guys comment and complain against Blacks only events.

  • Baai - 2012-05-09 10:26

the irony is the girl was sent there on purpose to provoke this atmosphere. Would any white boer kids be taken into some Xhosa initiatiuon as a XHOSA / i.e get a xhosa as part of the Voortrekkers / boy scoyt type thing, no. They sent that girl there on purpose to make white people look bad, its a shame white people aren't even allowed their OWN CULTURE. Jesus.

      Carla - 2012-05-09 10:52

Since when is hockey an integral part of Afrikaans culture?

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 11:04

      @moi; Since we wanted it.

      Carla - 2012-05-09 11:17

Really?? I played hockey all through primary and highschool. I'm not Afrikaans. I must have missed the memo.

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:42

@Moi, with own culture we are referring to, white Afrikaners doing their own thing together with their own people. Listening to our own music, speaking in our own language.

  • hans.schouwstra.7 - 2012-05-09 10:27

ok first of all I dont agree with bokkie week/trails but the article mentionsthat the learner is in gr 11, now all of us that have children in highschool black or white (old modelC) know that bokkie week is a white only so please for her to say she didnt know that I think that is not completly true, either she or her coach at Wagpos are naive or they wanted to create a scene, make up your own mind.

      unathi.mazomba - 2012-05-09 10:40

i think it's unfair that she had to be treated that way...this is now now the new South Africa,we dn't have time for racism anymore.

      Nigel - 2012-05-09 10:42

I cannot for one second understand why there would be a whites only Bokkie week, what is this the 19th century, & before all the black people start saying yes, yes, by the same token, how can black people justify, the Black Management Forum, or the Black Entrepreneurs Forum, or statements like "the ANC is for Blacks, or you aren't allowed to enroll in university because you are white, or because you can't get a job because you are not black enough, its all the same thing, racial discrimination, so lets stop being hypocrites, its all wrong no matter who is doing it.

      Philimsomi - 2012-05-09 11:05

@Nigel, i understand why these blacks only organisations were started, and in my oppinion as black south africans we have to own up @ some point and change the names of these org/forums and how they operate because they realy dont represent what our constitution say!

      Peter - 2012-05-09 11:06

@unathi.mazomba - Good point but if we dont have time for it why is there BEE and Affirmative action?

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 11:10

@ Unati; If you don't have time for racism anymore, what are you doing from your side to stop BEE or other laws against white people in this country? The bokkie week started as a result of affirmative action. It is there to give white kids an opportunity to show of their talent which is denied by AFFIRMATIVE ACTION at provincial level. Is affirmative action NOT unfair?

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:45

'black south africans we have to own up' @Philimsomi, but as white South Africans we may not own up?

  • Jaco - 2012-05-09 10:27

Why can't white people do there own thing?

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-09 10:41

Good question. Why can't u17's play for the u11's? Blacks will always find a way to be the victim. She was not invited because she is not an Afrikaner. This event started in 1990. Nothing new.

      Jaco - 2012-05-09 10:49

This is not fair. We have to stand back for everything including our cultures. - 2012-05-09 10:51

Apparently it's not just a whites only event but an Afrikaner event? That implies my kids are excluded to. I am OK with that exclusion. I really don't like being grouped as a Whites cultural group (because its is very diverse and heterogenous) Sure the law puts me into a racial group and I have to live with that but I don't want to be grouped in such a 'cultural group' It doesn't exist

  • Nigel - 2012-05-09 10:32

well if this story is accurate, it is unacceptable, just like it is unacceptable for Malema to say "the ANC is for blacks only" .... again , all this is a result of the ANC sponsored racism against minorities (mainly whites). BEE is another racist cause of this kind of retaliation, why all of a sudden is there a surge of racist incidents, MALEMA is the reason, thanks to the ANC & ITS out of control racist YL.

  • Jannie - 2012-05-09 10:34

Horskool? Don't you have an editor that checks for mistakes? :P

  • Rose - 2012-05-09 10:35

The ANC and Liberals are killing our White culture and heritage!! Bokkie week is for WHITES only and this black kid was NOT invited. Why must we settle for this multicultural BS!! That is the problem in the world - being forced to mingle with people from different races and cultures!!

      Jaco - 2012-05-09 10:42

I agree, we have a culture to. Respect that please, I respect black and all other people's cultures. - 2012-05-09 10:56

Please don't define a white cultural group! Bokkie week is not for whites. Its for Afrikaners but even that is a generalisation that is unfair on my Afrikaner friends. It seems it's for white Afrikaners that reject association with other races. I don't mind if they have such events. Just label them properly so I am most defintely excluded. At least the Black Management Forum have a clear label. By the way the BMF accept all races as members but their purpose is clear.

      mark.dennill - 2012-05-09 11:00

unfortunately rose our right to having a culture has been stripped from us, and i am afraid to say that even if all the whites in south africa disappeared there would still be a reason to blame anything they like on racism and apartheid

      Irma - 2012-05-09 11:16

Wow, being forced to mingle with people from different races? That sounds terrible. If you want to live in a white only country, good luck. There isn't one, so you are going to have to come to terms with "mingling" with different races.

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:47

David, you've got no idea what Bokkie weekend is about and why it was started. With AA most white kids don't get a chance, Bokkie weekend was created to give the victims of AA a chance to do sport for the sake of sport, and not politics.

  • Michael - 2012-05-09 10:35

"National Black Nurses Association" "The Association of Black Women" "Black Career Women" "Blacks Only Comedy show""Black students Association""Black Enterprise awards""Black training and enterprise group".........etc.

      Jaco - 2012-05-09 10:44

why can't we have some thing? but everybody is always with the race card

  • Positive - 2012-05-09 10:35

Another wake up call South Africa , we create our own problems , when some white people here the word BEE and AA then they feels like being discriminated but when he is the decision maker within a business will he really give a person of color a fair opportunity ? Even though I hate this BEE and AA but I'll rather go for a small opportunity then no opportunity and white and Black people should stop with this blaming causse most Racism starts at Home when you and Your Buddys talking K*K the day racism will stop when you stop spreading racism in your social and working environment

  • bashin.monyela - 2012-05-09 10:36

White people events are boring anyway so i don't know why some black people wanna mix themselves.

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 11:15

      Yes, keep to yourself.

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-09 11:29

      To get attention.

  • Avenging - 2012-05-09 10:36

Hoërskool Grenswag should have been more specific. The event is meant for white Afrikaans children, I doubt English speaking white children would be welcome there either. That's fine, it's a cultural thing. You don't hear of the 'Boere' wanting to go dance in a kraal at a black cultural gathering. The problem is that the white nations are filled with traitors who hate there own races and are racist toward their own peoples. This coach, Louis Koen, is a trouble maker who sent this black pupil to make more waves on already troubled race waters. He is a traitor to his own people and should be dealt with as such, ie. hung from the nearest tree.

      bashin.monyela - 2012-05-09 10:39

How about white sangomas, white rappers, white R n B artist, there is even a white mountain school initiate.

  • Henk - 2012-05-09 10:36

bokkie week is on for years now. this issues around it was on the table many times. why must everything the Afrikaner wants to do have include everybody? the systems are discriminating against brilliant white sportmen and women because of racism. (thay cant be in cravenweek teams because they are good and white. affirmative action must give the black kid the opportunity even if he is not the best) therefor the Afrikaner will create opportunities for kids to be recognised for their achievements. as the Afrikaner build this land and its infra structure to where it was before 1994. it stand organisations and or who ever free to organise their own cultural events. nobody can force anybody to invite people to their party just because they want to attent it because they are black.

      W.van.Heerden1969 - 2012-05-09 10:46

Henk I do not have a idea who you are but your comment is 100% true. My kid is to WHITE for Craven week. Bokkie week is to give kids like mine the opportunity to compete and if he is the best get recognition for his hard work and not told he is to WHITE to make the team.

  • JannieDeVos - 2012-05-09 10:38

  • Mervyn - 2012-05-09 10:41

All commenters on this page that is defending this \whites only\ event is racist. They probably longing for the good old apartheid days.

      Alfred - 2012-05-09 11:09

I could say exactly the same thing about anyone who supports BEE.

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 11:25

YES Mervyn, I do long for the days where I could find a work and look after my family and where the government is not RAPING the country.

      Gerald - 2012-05-09 11:46

Mervyn It is an Afrikaaner event not a \whites only\ event

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:51

@Mervyn, and what is your opinion on the Black Business Forum?

      Mervyn - 2012-05-09 13:30

I don't think we should point fingers at events outside of this article. I have never heard of white kids or adults chased away from other cultural events. By the way, how is hockey a cultural event? I thought sports events are free for all to participate in?

  • E=MC2 - 2012-05-09 10:43

everyone seems to be juming on the race band wagon ever since that stupid racist tweet...

  • chantelle.coertze - 2012-05-09 10:43

I don't have the facts... but this is a child who is passionate about hockey, immaterial of her colour... Her coach thought she was good enough and so did she; why not let her at least try out?

      Irma - 2012-05-09 11:18

There are other places where she could have tried out. No one is sayign she can't play because she is black, but this is a specific AFRIKAANS trial. She could join a club, get her coach to help her into other places, etc but this one unfortunately is not for her. Not all opporunities are for all people.

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 11:30

She was not invited. This is for payers who is good enough to play at provincial level but is denied the opportunity due to affirmative action in the sport, to participate on a higher level. If she was on this level, she surely would have been invited to the provincial try-outs, where they want good players of colour to make up the required number of non-white players.

      Merven - 2012-05-09 11:52

@Chantelle, every school got AA to get blacks into sport, why go to a event that was created to help the victims of AA?

  • Chantelle - 2012-05-09 10:43

This media frenzy is getting tired.. Whites VS Blacks, Blacks VS Whites.. BORING!

      Sango - 2012-05-09 10:50

i beg to defer because to me it shows how some people will never accept other. The future don't look very good if thing like this still happens in 2012. After 18 long years of democracy.

  • Grant Henry - 2012-05-09 10:44

What an idiot. Why do the Afrikaaners always think there culture is being taken away. And the funny thing is they always think that Rugby is their sport, do they not know that Rugby was invented by the English in the late 1800's. And Rugby is played all around the world right now. There Afrikaans language is vanishing. everything is in english in South Africa. all it is now is a second rate language and lets not forget that there is other black official languages and so it is actually 12th in this country. If you so racist, u well come to leave this country.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 11:12

@Grant way to go on not being racist yourself....

White supremacy has come down. Its now time for black supremacy. You white people are having it easy compared to what you did to black people. You thought you were untouchable. Cosmic don't you think its better for you to go back to your ancestoral land. \r\n\r\nOne last thing I don't even understand why are whites called afrikaaners cause the truth of the matter they are not africans

      Irma - 2012-05-09 11:20

At Tebomasha, I didn't do anything to black people except treat them as my equal. I was not born in apartheid, I did not support it, please get a life and understand that NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE are the enemy.

      Peter - 2012-05-09 11:31

@tebomasha - Are you retarded by any chance? you seriously could have fooled me, Why dont you go back to your ancestral land in central africa? see what i did there? do you understand? i can explain it for you if you dont

      barend.heymans - 2012-05-09 11:36

@tebomasha; Why do YOU not go back to your 'ancestoral land'? Where is it, Zimbabwe or further north? I doubt that you even know where it is.

      Bob - 2012-05-09 11:39

tebomasha, you are a fantastic example of all that is wrong in SA, a horrible racist, why don't you check your heritage line, you might well find you are not from SA, so do us all a favour and clear of to the Congo or wherever it is you originate

      Ken - 2012-05-09 11:50

@tebomasha It would be a pretty crowded place if we all went back to the same place were it all began. But maybe you would discover that your cousin thousand times removed is Japanese or your nephew 300 times removed is in fact a blue eyed Danish girl.

I teach my daughter to know that all people, irrespective of colour, creed or social status, deserve equal rights, have same aspirations and need to be respected. I also teach her that sometimes, some families, or groups, or associations, may want to congregate on their own. In such a case she should respect that and should not see racism in every thing she cannot control, understand or be part of.

      mduduziamadeus - 2012-05-09 10:55

Well said Thozi. If all black people would have your mentality, we wouldn't have all this bickering

yes Thozi, me too, I teach my kids to respect others, irrespective of color & they will grow up without this racist baggage.

  • Joanita - 2012-05-09 10:48

Why does this child need to go to bokkie week? Surely with all the quotas in place for Gauteng/SA sports, she will be in the SA hockey School's team, no? Its my understanding that bokkie week was designed so that the white kids that don't make provincial teams, because of the enforced quota, can also have some place to play. 'Because I'm black' has become such an over used daily sentence. The white kids must hear 'sorry, space for quota players only' and be ok with it. So I honestly don't see the issue here

      Nadine - 2012-05-09 12:54

      remain a racist

  • Will - 2012-05-09 10:49

Bokkie week is a white cultural thing - everyone knows that. For this kid to want to be part of it , is the same as me that want to go into the bush and be circumcised. Get real! This has nothing to do with race , but culture!

      Jaco - 2012-05-09 10:52

thanks for that comment! this nothing to do with race, only our culture. Being a white Afrikaans speaking South African.

      Michael - 2012-05-09 10:53

The only culture recognized in this country is black culture.

      Sango - 2012-05-09 11:07

i have seen white teenagers who went to circumcision with black teens. To me that shows people who want to learn about other cultures. I can tell you this now we feel proud to have them. May god bless them.

Let me guess, the foreskins they've send to parliament and there they've created Malema?

  • Rubani - 2012-05-09 10:49

What is wrong with South Africans white and black...I lived there for 4 years and I have never seen such divided people. The blacks are rude and treat there own black brothers from other countries very badly... the whites think that all blacks are thieves and uneducated. This case is just another example of the screwed up minds of South African..Rainbow Nation my ASS.

      Avenging - 2012-05-09 10:56

You have hit the nail on the head, 'Rainbow Nation my ASS'. A rainbow is only a rainbow if the colours remain separated, if they mix, all you have is a disgusting grey mess that looks like turd and gives off an unpleasant smell.

      shaficks - 2012-05-09 11:20

If all the colours of the rainbow mix it actually makes white

      Avenging - 2012-05-09 11:26

The rainbow comes from the 'white' light being divided into the 7 primaries. What is referred to as white is actually clear or transparent. The key is in dividing or splitting the light to make something attractive to the eye.
