Blast was part of escape plot - police

Cape Town - Police said on Monday that preliminary investigations show the explosion on a vehicle transporting prisoners in Johannesburg was part of an escape plot, according to reports.

An explosion was triggered on a vehicle transporting 36 prisoners from court to the Johannesburg Central Prison, killing three, leaving four critically injured, and 10 with minor injuries, eNCA journalist Michelle Craig reported.

Police said that "dangerous criminals" were part of the escape plot. The uninjured prisoners were taken back to prison, and are being processed.

Police confirmed that the device was in the back of the vehicle, but it is still unclear as to what type of device was used, she said.

Prison officials say investigations will show how prisoners were able to hide the explosive device, Craig said.

According to the police, the explosion occurred in transit, not on the prison premises, but the driver did not stop the vehicle until he reached the prison, because of safety concerns.

Two prisoners escaped after the blast, but were re-arrested.

Prison officials say investigations will show how prisoners were able to hide the explosive device, Craig said. How the hell could they hid explosives, on a police/prison truck???

Thats why they are behind bars, poor planning. They got rearested, shows lack of focus, in their intire lives.if u turn all prison guards into hang men, surely, you will find half of them working over time on daily basis

Well thats what they did and they got what they asked for. Good riddance to rubbish.

      lownabester - 2012-10-22 19:21

Carolyn, what if there were a few people on that may have shoplift a packet of soup to feed their families. Not all are guilty or hardcore.

They weren't very bright, detonating an explosive device in a small enclosed area. Look at the mess they made...

It sounds like the driver did a good job, keeping his/her head and getting those prisoners back to the prison after the explosion and preventing further escapes. At least one person in the justice system does their job effectively. Well done that person. You deserve a bonus (IF this report is accurate that is - these days we can't trust the media to do THEIR jobs well either!)

A job well done driver, I can't imagine how quick u wished to c urself at the prison premises.

This could be a profitable scenario. What is the cost of a court case these days?

?? If they wanted to escape why trigger the device 3 blocks from the prison? "investigations will show how prisoners were able to hide the explosive device" - does this indicate that the device was triggerd inside the truck? - inside job - Why? A perspective: of the 36 prisoners, one or more have information linking either high ranking police officials or politicians to crimes that they had commited, eg, ATM Blasts or murders. The blast should have resulted in those prisoners being silenced. No matter how dumb one can be, I doubt if a complete imbecil will detonate an explosive device 3 to 5 meters from themselves and still be hoping to be able to run, let alone be alive.

  • steveroodt - 2012-10-23 05:17

These guys been watching to much Macgyver on tv

  • Debra - 2012-10-23 12:15

I still think there is something fishy here, If the prisnors were such hard core criminals as per the interview by the cops weren't they suppose to chain them or something. And how and when did they get the explosive on the van as they are watched by the cops from and to court.
