Blocked drain leads to grim discovery

Pietermaritzburg - A blocked drain led to a gruesome discovery on Sunday, when a full-term foetus was found.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the owner of a hair salon in Theatre Lane inspected a blocked drain and discovered a foetus blocking it.

“An inquest has been opened, and police will be investigating the matter,” she said.

A bystander told The Witness he suspected the foetus had been there for about four or five hours. A photograph sent to The Witness shows the umbilical cord still attached.

“I do not think that it was born prematurely because you could see that it had been fully formed,” said Zazu Nxele. “The person who did this looks like they did not plan for it to happen this way.”

He said the baby had been found near a popular nightclub and he was concerned that the mother may not “be very far because she would not be in a very good condition”, he said.

Another shocked bystander told The Witness: “The people who gathered around were shocked at what they were seeing. Some were crying.

“The baby has been covered by police and a lot of people have left,” said Sindisiwe Mhlongo, who works near where the baby was found.

Baby Safe

Rene Morcom, who established the Baby Safe in Pietermaritzburg, said a lack of social support for mothers was a contributing factor in the increasing phenomenon of abandoned babies.

The Baby Safe in the CBD is situated near Theatre Lane where the foetus was found. She said it had received three babies since its inception in October 2009.

Morcom said new mothers who found themselves unable to care for their babies were not being given the support they needed at hospitals.

She said one distraught mother had confided in her that when she raised doubts about her ability to care for her baby at a city hospital, and asked to leave her child there, a nurse said to her: “You [had sex], now you take the baby.”

Morcom said she was caring for 10 babies whose mothers were unable to do so and was trying to get land in Edendale to establish a Baby Safe there.

“Some mothers are unable to get to the Baby Safe in town on the corner of Langalibalele Street and George Street.

“One mother who called said she was ‘too lazy’ to bring the child to town and said: ‘You come and fetch my baby or I’ll kill it’.”

The baby safe is a ventilated box into which women can place their newborn babies anonymously instead of leaving them in bins, toilets or other isolated places where they may die. A voice call notifies members of Pietermaritzburg Pregnancy Assist (PPA) when a baby is placed in the safe.

  • Elize - 2012-04-02 11:52

"Rene Morcom, who established the Baby Safe in Pietermaritzburg, said a lack of social support for mothers was a contributing factor in the increasing phenomenon of abandoned babies." Good heavens there are FREE contraceptives available!!! Are they too LAZY to use that as well?? Sterilize them for free then they can carry on with their promiscious lifestyle without the risk of conceiving and killing their unborn babies.

  • nanda.pita1 - 2012-04-02 12:25

How sad! besides the tragedy of the situation we now have to change the romantic "stalk" myth to "babies are delivered to your post boxes".

This is just awful.. these poor babies! I understand the "you had sex, you take responsibility", but some of these women are raped, abused, drug addicts, in no position to take care of their babies. Still, I feel this is an unforgivable act, taking the life of a child who has as much right to a LIFE as any one of us.

I don't understand why any new mother would push her baby into a drain. Why not rather, if totally desperate, wrap it in a blanket and put in on someone's front stoep? Yes yes I know that's also not legal but a lot more humane? Or maybe even put it at the entrance of a church building on a Sunday morning? BUT not in a drain, NOT in a drop toilet, if the baby dies it is murder for Pete's sake!

  • radlegend - 2012-04-02 13:51

This is disgusting!! WTF?!?!?! If you dont have money for birth Control...youc an get condoms for free!!!!! Seriously....what the hell is wrong with these people? That's why i am a full-on abortion supporter. *Pro-Choice* Rather terminate the baby while it's still in the womb than give birth to it, and let it cry itself to death. Rather terminate the pregnancy than abandon your baby in a public toilet. Rather terminate the pregnancy than have a child grow up in an orphanage, getting abused, and later living on the streets and begging for money at traffic lights. Rather NOT bring a child into the world if you KNOW you can't support it, and if you KNOW you dont want it.

      radlegend - 2012-04-02 13:54

And then these women keep having babies, while some other women are sterile and cant have kids. This is just too sad. People like this should be the ones who're sterile. Why have sex in the first place then (unprotected) if you dont want a baby?? I mean really??? WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Tasneem - 2012-04-25 15:14

I dont support abortion, because i have a beautiful amazing daughter, that was unplanned and we didnt know how we were gonn araise her(financially).we have our hard times BUT I NEVER ONCE THOUGHT ABOUT ABORTING HER OR ABANDONING HER!!! but before you get on my case...i totally understand where you are coming from, and what you are saying...youre right...

  • Tasneem - 2012-04-25 15:17

rip their wombs out and tear their limbs off slowly....and not even that would come close to what that poor precious angel baby goes through in its first and last few hours on in this world...not just physically but emotionally.that baby has no comprehension,no understanding of why its feeling the pain its in!!!
