Bloemfontein - Family members of a Free State teacher are desperately seeking answers after he was attacked in mysterious circumstances, Netwerk24's André Damons reported on Tuesday.

Ernest Wessels, 58, was found severely beaten in his Bloemfontein flat, where he lives alone with two dogs.

Wessels sustained bleeding on the brain and has been hooked up to a ventilator. He had bruises all over his face and body.

But Wessels’s son-in-law Deon van Zyl questioned the nature of the attack, saying it looks as if Wessels was attacked elsewhere and dumped at his home. He also said there were no signs of a break-in and nothing appears to have been taken from the house.

Injuries to his arms indicate that he fought back, Van Zyl said. It also appears as if he was hit very hard in the face with an object.

The police’s Captain Chaka Marope said the attack was being investigated and has asked anyone with information to phone the Bainsvlei police station on 051 409 6001.
