Cape Town - The body recovered from Table Mountain on Thursday morning may be that of a man reported missing at the Camps Bay police station three days ago, police have confirmed.

Captain Ezra October, spokesperson for the Cape Town Central police, told News24 the body was not that of Taro Spies, who is presumed to have gone missing on the mountain over a month ago.

“The body was not badly decomposed and is not suspected to have been on the mountain longer than a few days,” he said.

The man is suspected to have fallen about 200m and was found by a hiker on Wednesday afternoon near the Arrow Final area.

“The clothing worn matches those worn by the man who was reported missing,” he said.

No foul play is suspected and police are in the process of confirming the man’s identity.

October confirmed no leads have been received surrounding the disappearance of Spies, who went missing on May 12.

He was last seen at his Muizenberg home. His car was found the next day on Tafelberg Road.

News24 previously reported it was believed Spies, an active and fit person, had parked his car and gone hiking.

He has not been seen since.

Spies is over 2m tall, thin, has brown eyes, long dark hair and wears spectacles.
