Johannesburg - The body of a man was recovered while another man was still missing near St Helena Bay in the Western Cape on Sunday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The NSRI were notified around 06:30 following reports of a boat capsizing south of Lientjies Klip, St Helena Bay, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

Two men were reported missing while a third man managed to get to shore to raise the alarm.

"Police were already on the scene searching for two missing fisherman," Lambinon said.

"According to the survivor, a friend of the skipper, reportedly a visitor to the area... the boat had capsized 180 degrees bow to stern. All three men were wearing life-jackets."

During shore patrols the body of the man, believed to be the skipper, was found washed up on the beach and recovered.

"The body of the deceased St Helena Bay man, aged 42, has been handed into the care of Police and the Forensic Pathology Services," Lambinon said.

"NSRI recovered the fishermen's net, fully laden with fish, in the hopes of finding the missing fishermen in the vicinity but there remains no sign of the missing fisherman and an ongoing search is continuing."

Police were continuing the search for the missing man, 43-years-old and from St Helena Bay.

Police opened an inquest docket for the 42-year-old man.
