Johannesburg - Two men were arrested on Monday for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and for impersonating a police officer at the Sileza Border post, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said police approached a homestead in the area and conducted a search on a BMW with three men inside.

"Two suspects were arrested after they were found in possession of a 9mm pistol with seven live rounds as well as a police uniform," he said in a statement.

"The third suspect, who is a well known taxi owner in the area, managed to escape and he is still at large."

The men were charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property and impersonating a police officer.

Zwane said the firearm would be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crime in the province.

"Initial investigation entails that suspects are usually conducting illegal roadblocks using police uniforms around the area and take bribes from the undocumented," he said.

Zwane said the men would appear in the Ubombo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
