Johannesburg - The Springboks, even in defeat, showed the fighting spirit and endurance typical of South Africa's determination to overcome in trying circumstances, the ANC said on Sunday.

The ruling party saluted "Amabhokobhoko for [its] sterling performance in the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup" despite not winning, the ANC said in a statement.

"Their fighting spirit and endurance is typical of our national determination to conquer under very trying and difficult circumstances."

The ANC said the Springboks managed to fly South Africa's flag to the very last minute without flinching and in their loss, were victorious flag bearers for the nation.

"As they could not proceed to the finals, they did so with their heads held high. South Africans from all walks of life must celebrate this display of commitment and courage," the ANC said.

"We commend them individually and collectively for carrying our spirits high."

In pulsating match at Twickenham in London on Saturday, South Africa lost to New Zealand 20-18.
