Johannesburg - A policeman accused of shooting dead a Boksburg man has been released on bail, according to reports on Wednesday.

SABC radio news and Eyewitness news identified him as Raymond le Roux, who appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of murder.

He reportedly said he killed Rean Ramdin, 29, by accident after he was arrested during a raid at Presley's nightclub in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, for drug possession at the weekend.

Le Roux said Ramdin escaped from the police van and that he fired nine warning shots. The last bullet accidentally hit Ramdin in this chest.

He was released on R2 000 bail and was due to appear in court again on April 17.

Isn't it weird that a man running away was shot in the chest?

Jessica you missing the point, leave the racism card out of it. Q: How fast does a man run with handcuffs? A: Faster than a cop carrying a gun. This is discusting, POINT!!!!

      Jeremy - 2012-02-23 08:03

Oh and Jessica by the way, who says Raymond Le Roux is white, I know coloured people with Le Roux surname. Look in the mirror and see who the racist is???

Do different laws apply to different entities? When some hippy breaks into your home and is caught and runs away you are not permitted to shoot. Yet the cops it seems has carte blanche to shoot now, shoot later and then ask a question or two when you run away?

      Mhlophe - 2012-02-23 12:03

I read that this policeman was arrested and charged for murder, what did you read? You are not permitted to shoot a burglar when he is no longer a threat to you, if he is running away, you are not in danger!

  • Silvana - 2012-02-23 06:54

After how many shots is it no longer a warning? 9 Shots! That's a whole magazine in the average pistol. What kind of idiots do you take the public for or is this level of your IQ?

      Mhlophe - 2012-02-23 12:07

Knowing how the police operate, all the shot were aimed at the suspect, those that missed were called warning shots. The police man stopped shooting when the ninth shot hit and the guy fell down. Most 9mm's used by the police are the locally manufactured Z88 which holds 15 rounds in the magazine. If it were me being shot at, regardless of the circumstances, I would have laid on the ground after the first shot.

@Jessica, if u ain't got nothing to say, just keep quiet....why does everything have to be about race? no one's crying racism here except u. while there's still people like you, SA will never progress

Ag shame,, only R2000.00 bail...Maybe the police will give him a bonus.. leave pay, and allow him still to use the police car to take the kids to school.

I am horrified. Last year my 88 year old mother was attacked and stabbed outside our home. Raymond le Roux was the detective with the flying squad who came to my moms rescue and arrested the attacker, who was sentenced yesterday for attempted murder. Raymond le Roux was amazing with my mom...very caring and concerned. He stayed with mom until we arrived at the scene of the attack to take my mom to hospital. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever considered him do something like this as he was such a gentleman. I can only hope and pray that he did not do this on purpose. My thought are with his family and the family of Rean Ramdin. May he rest in peace and may justice be done. Another life gone too soon.

Warning shot to the chest? How does a hand cuffed man escape from a police van? Surely he was unarmed? How can you shoot an unarmed man?

  • Garrick Featherstonehaugh - 2012-02-23 10:20

9 warning shots!!! Okay so if it HAD to be 9, aren't warning shots fired skywards or into the ground and not into the chest of a fleeing man. The guy was handcuffed for f*ck sake, what was he going to do to you. You should be put in jail, because you took someones brother, son and loved one away, and lied. So he had drugs on him! Big whoop, was he a murderer, rapist, cop killer, nope. Just some poor 29 year old with a bit of a weed habit. I hate the cops, truly hate, the kinda hate we're not allowed to have. They don't protect, they don't defend, they bribe, corrupt and murder. Shame on you, hope you burn in hell you bad bad bad person!

This cop could have shot Rean in the leg. The cop should be found guilty. He said it was an accident. How many times did he have to prove it was an accident. How can this cop plead not guilty if he is guilty. you got attitude cop. will prove you are guilty.
