Johannesburg - A Boksburg man was arrested after he allegedly took nude photographs of his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter and shared them online, police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the 39-year-old, whose alias was "APE man", shared the pictures with users as far as the United States of America. His "online adventures" were first detected by Homeland Security in that country.

"After receiving and following up on information from their US colleagues, the specialised team working for the South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit... went and arrested the suspect at his place of work in Boksburg [on Wednesday]," Naidoo said.

"The suspect is alleged to have taken as many as 50 pictures of the victim in naked poses and advertising them online, while the child’s mother was oblivious of what her daughter was being subjected to by her boyfriend."

Police seized three laptops, two external hard drives, two cellphones, three SD cards, a mini spy camera, a digital audio player and a PlayStation console.

The man was expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
