Johannesburg - A second East Rand toddler has survived a near-drowning in a swimming pool this week, paramedics said on Tuesday.

The two-year-old boy was in a serious, but stable condition in the Tambo Memorial Hospital after falling into a swimming pool in Parkrand, Boksburg, said Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

He said a woman in the street flagged down a paramedic on a motorcycle on Tuesday afternoon.

He entered the premises, saw the child floating in the pool, dived in and pulled him out. The paramedic resuscitated the boy before he was taken to hospital.

On Monday, a 4-year-old girl nearly drowned in a swimming pool in Morehill, Benoni, Wicks said.

Someone in the house pulled her out of the water and did mouth-to-mouth until the paramedics arrived.

They revived her and took her to the Tambo Memorial Hospital, where her condition was also serious, but stable, he said.

Said it before and I'll say it again. Swimming lessons can start right after a kid starts to walk, before potty training even. Neglect to do this at your own kids peril.

Agree 100%. My daughter started swimming lessons at about 2 years of age. Has helped tremendously. She now know to swim to the side if she falls in, but the big is that she CAN swim to the side if she falls in!

i don't undersdtand why she flagged down a paramedic, instead of taking the child out of the pool? perhaps she shpould have taken the child out first ...
