Bongani Moyo arrested after tip-offs

2011-08-29 07:54

Johannesburg - One of South Africa's most wanted criminals, Bongani Moyo, is to appear in court on Monday morning after he was arrested on Sunday night following his second escape this year, Gauteng police said.

"Moyo was arrested in Hillbrow just after 22:00," Brigadier Neville Malila said.

"He was in a car with two other Zimbabwean nationals when police caught them," he said.

They have been charged with harbouring a wanted criminal.

Malila said his arrest was made after investigators followed leads received from community members.

"They used information to track him down, and all three of them co-operated under duress," he said.

Moyo, who has allegedly been linked to more than 35 bank robberies, escaped from the Pretoria Regional Court earlier this month.

He was on crutches at the time of his escape, not locked in a cell or wearing shackles.

According to police, Moyo was sitting between courts 16 and 17 and escaped through court 16. Two investigating officers and two policemen were since suspended from their duties at the court.

In March, the 29-year-old escaped from Boksburg Prison. He was then arrested near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo, after returning from his native country, Zimbabwe.

"He has been charged with the 35 bank robberies, as well as the two escapes," Malila said.

Moyo spent the night in a high risk facility in Johannesburg, before his appearance at a Pretoria court on Monday.

  • Gungets Tuft - 2011-08-29 08:25

The guys that paid for him to be allowed to escape in the first place are going to want their money back.

  • Coconut - 2011-08-29 08:34

Wonderful news. Now let us see how long they will remain in custody before some corrupt cop looks the other way in order for them to escape again. My take is put them up against the nearest wall and shoot them whilst trying to escape. Why waste tax payers money.

  • Aqhama - 2011-08-29 08:41

So lets hope this time the SAPS actually DO their job and keep him in custody.

  • Durbanite78 - 2011-08-29 09:09

I think this time this blood thirsty rogue must be chained legs and arms and probably shud be guarded by police dogs when he appears in court, becos the police are sleeping. The prosecution team must not spare this criminal, they shud not show him many mercy. Good job guys.

  • Eintlik - 2011-08-29 09:15

Will the police be able to keep him behind bars this time, or must the public assist as usual!

Hell man..just saw this guys photo and he is not a human being at all. Glassy bloodshot eyes, thick fat rubber-like lips, peppercorn hair, big flat nose with wide nostrils and a black skin. Some kind of animal.
