Botched circumcision death toll rises

2014-07-04 22:37

Johannesburg - Twenty-six boys have died since the start of the winter initiation season because of botched circumcisions, the traditional affairs department said on Friday.

"The total number of young boys that have lost their lives since the start of the initiation season has risen to 26," said Deputy Traditional Affairs Minister Obed Bapela.

"Twenty-one initiates are from the Eastern Cape, four from Mpumalanga, and one from the Western Cape."

On Thursday, 104 boys were admitted for dehydration, septic circumcision, gangrene, and other related injuries.

Bapela will visit the Eastern Cape next week to assess the areas that have recorded a high number of deaths.

Seven people have been arrested for operating illegal initiation schools in the Eastern Cape.

"The government cannot watch as our children are dying in numbers. This must come to an end," Bapela said.

Such a barbaric ritual... and as for the mythic health benefits...there is this modern invention called soap and you wash while you bath/shower(keep your junk clean)... as for the myth that it helps to combat the transfer of Std's and HIV.... well if you are going to sleep around the best defense is these remarkable things called Condoms... As for traditions/religion... do you really want to risk your childs life for a ritual that was started and condoned by people who rubbed sticks together to make fire and thought that the earth was flat???

Let them carry on. It's their religion so why intervene.

  • Mike Jones - 2014-07-04 22:58

Who is responsible for protecting these children? When culture is more important than the lives of children, then it is about time for a cultural revision.

  • Fanele Eric Gina - 2014-07-04 23:04

If traditional culture results to death, it should be ended. If only they had considered MMC, non of this would have happend.

  • Mark Lyndon - 2014-07-04 23:10

Over 100 deaths a year as well as some penile amputations, and this year at least one castration. The sooner this outdated tradition dies out, the better. No-one becomes a man by having parts of their manhood cut off anyway. Google "ulwaluko" for photos of what can go wrong.

      Luvo Umtyhili Weemfihlelo Kasa - 2014-07-05 00:14

If you were from the cultures that practise this "outdated tradition" you wouldnt be saying what you just said.

      Mhluleli - 2014-07-05 02:36

I don't understand what is going on with these initiation schools lately. I grew up on a farm and all the black boys went to initiation school. In all the years that my father had the farm, not one of them died or were mutilated at the school and not one of them ever required medical attention upon their return. They left as boys and returned as proud young men. Although there was a lot of secrecy around the schools and we never knew the details of where they were, we all knew that they were headed up by respected old men. (Traditional healers or "toordokters" as they were called in those days). Are these initiation schools in modern times run by fakes and butchers just in it for the money? It seems as if is getting worse every year?

      Klaus Muller - 2014-07-05 07:13

We used to have Law and Order, now we are left with and, and, and I want more, more, more - and for free :-((((

      Masdi Majo - 2014-07-05 07:26

You are hundred percent right pieter right people of this days are running up for money, there are lot of things to follow during this initiation school, but people of this days are looking for money and if government can take a serious action about this I hope next year no one will die

      Muzi Sibiya - 2014-07-05 08:29

Man man man Pieter,I like your comment here you only stated facts nothing else. Keep it up!!!!!!! Uyindoda

      Mark Lyndon - 2014-07-05 12:53

Most Muslims circumcise a lot later - anywhere from around the age of seven to puberty.

      Mario Meyer - 2014-07-07 09:28

Will you go to hell for not getting it done... don't understand why people still do this... some for medical reasons. This is nothing less than human sacrifice . a barbaric outdated dark age practice ..all in the name of culture . its like feeding a chicken to be sacificed at a cultural meeting..dicusting

      Pieter Oosthuysen - 2014-07-05 12:52

Leave the people alone. Each culture has its own eccentricities. What is the difference between a trained traditional healer cutting a boy and a Rabbi cutting a boy? Not one of them have any medical degree. The problem is not the practise, the problem is that, like everywhere in society today, money grabbers that does not know what the hell they are doing jump in for a fast buck. Read my comment above - in the "old primitive days" the boys did not die and they were not mutilated. The deaths are on the increase because there is money to be made and there is no control over the people that run the schools. It is difficult - I don't think it is the governments place to regulate these schools. In traditional times the people who headed up these schools were appointed / selected by the elders and, for lack of a better word, "Tribal Council". Unfortunately all that disappeared with modernisation and urbanisation and the people responsible for the mutilation and deaths are self-appointed fakes and they should be jailed.

  • Elizabeth Venter - 2014-07-05 10:05

Black people have a right to practice their culture as much as white people do, so let them be. what seems normal to us might be barbaric to them and vice versa. a lot of these initiation schools are run by fakes who have no experience, out to make a quick buck and the fault is on the government and on the parents who should be watching out for people like this...

  • Paljas Paljassie - 2014-07-05 10:07

  • Martin Band - 2014-07-05 10:32

I am so glad that the police have finally arrested some body. I feel great simpathy however of the parents of the 26 young men who have already lost there lives. I trust that the justice system will apply the maximum sentences possible to these men and to the others that have avoided being caught up to.

The same stupidity repeats year after year...when are they going to progress? A thousand years from now? The tech is here, the docters are available but no - "traditions" and "culture" are more important. It's murder.

  • Faith Bokaba - 2014-07-05 11:38

There will be deaths in 2015, 2016, 2017,...Some things are not about change. Those who die are said to be weak and so its their fault. More like the CURE that helps you ONLY if you believe.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE A baby was born without eyelids, however, the doctors knew what to do. After he was circumcised, they used the foreskin to make new eyelids. It turned out to work. He ended up with great foresight, but he was cock-eyed.

  • Garrick Dunstan - 2014-07-05 19:27

  • Pathaan Vakeel - 2014-07-15 00:31

in Mpumalanga, it is the house of traditional leaders that have been remiss in failing to advise the respect royal houses and chiefs of the proper circumcision hygiene and that male child circumcision of children below 16 is prohibited and further that there are specific standards that must be met in order for children bet 16 and 18 to be circumcised. they are also far too quick to point fingers at alleged illegal schools when only 1/2 of last years deaths in the province arose from Nkosi's that did not have permits to hold Ingoma!
