Both 'Sunday Rapist' witnesses deny alibi

Johannesburg - Two alibi witnesses on Friday denied they were with Johannes Jacobus Steyn on the days the so-called "Sunday Rapist" attacked his victims.

Judge Sita Kolbe ordered that the witnesses not be identified.

The first witness, a woman who worked with Steyn at the Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp during his community service, testified in the High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Alberton, that she never went to his home.

She was asked if she ever had sex with him at an abandoned holiday resort in Maropeng, where murdered teenager Louise de Waal's body was found, as Steyn had testified.

"Definitely not... Maybe in his dreams," she answered.

Steyn had claimed he was with her on 31 October  2010 when an 11-year old girl was abducted in Krugersdorp and raped in Magaliesburg.

She denied she was with him or ever had sex with him.

When advocate Anton Lerm, for Steyn, asked if she simply denied the sexual relationship because she was ashamed, she said this was untrue.

Steyn, allegedly the "Sunday Rapist", has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, 11 of rape, 10 of sexual assault, 10 of abduction, one of attempted sexual assault, and one of attempted abduction.

The second alibi witness who testified was Steyn's former work colleague.

Steyn had testified he helped him when he had car troubles while on holiday on 7 March 2010. A 16-year-old girl was abducted and raped in Rustenburg that day.

The man said he phoned Steyn for advice about his car, but it was in June that year and Steyn never came to help him.

"I phoned him for advice. I fixed it myself."

The trial was provisionally postponed to September 12 for Lerm to call Steyn's father and brother to testify.

What an idiot! He must get the harshest punishment. Not only did he commit the crimes, which is utterly digesting in it's self, but he has no respect for the law.

just on a technical point: how on earth do you call a witness to support your alibi, and then the witness states the opposite? Did Steyn and his advocate not consult with the witnesses aforehand? Rule #1 - never ask a question to the witness if you don't know what the answer is going to be.\r\nOr maybe the court called the witnesses.

Remember, he said he had these alibi witnesses...but didn't want to call them. The judge told him to call them, so he didn't have a choice really. But it's okay, he's only making things worse for himself, he's showing no remorse, telling lies under oath, etc...only makes the sentencing part worse for him, because the judge will take this all into consideration.

How could this sad excuse for a human have dreamt that 1 he would get away with his disgusting deeds? 2 people would believe his incredible lies? 3 his so-called witnesses would stick up for him? He is living in cloud cuckoo land. He should be put down like the rabid dog that he is. He is wasting the court's time and causing unbearable misery to the families of the girls he chose to despoil.
