Durban - A man, allegedly bound and gagged by a group of his friends for stealing a cellphone, apparently starved to death after he was flung into a manhole and forgotten.

A 25-year-old man, alleged to be connected to the killing, led police search and rescue officers to a manhole next to the Kenville railway line in Durban where they discovered his body on Thursday, several months after his death.

The officers descended into the 6m-deep hole and found the skeletal remains of the dead man, still bound with nylon rope.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that a man has been arrested in connection with the death.

“Police received information about a man who was killed and thrown into the sewerage pipe between September and November last year. Two other suspects are still sought by police,” he said.

“The remains of an unknown man were found in the sewerage drain near the railway station. The suspect will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon."

DNA will be taken to determine the identity, cause of death and the possible date of death, Zwane said.
