Johannesburg - Three people, including a child, were killed when a car collided into the back of a truck on the R59 in Vereeniging, in the early hours of Saturday morning, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER 24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said paramedics found the car partially engulfed in flames when they arrived.

"The fire department quickly extinguished the blaze, and when rescuers were able to assess the three occupants, it was clear that nothing more could be done for them," she said in a statement.

"The man and woman in their 40's and young boy of around the age of 10 years old had died due to the nature of the injuries that they had sustained in the crash."

Jackson said that scrap metal and car parts were strewn across the highway.

The two men in the truck were injured and treated on the scene one for a broken leg and the other for a deep cut to his head before they were transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.

"While paramedics were frantically trying to close the highway, another truck came through the scene, crashing through the metal that was now covering the road."

Jackson said no one else was injured.

The cause of the accident would be investigated.
