Johannesburg - A 5-year-old boy drowned at the Monwabisi Coastal Resort, the City of Cape Town said on Wednesday.

A lifeguard allegedly noticed a body floating in the water and pulled the semi-conscious boy out, the city's disaster management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

After dispatching a rescue vehicle and paramedic, the Western Cape's Emergency Medical Services handed the incident over to ER24 paramedics.

The boy was declared dead on the scene after resuscitation efforts failed.

He had been camping with his grandparents at the resort's caravan park.

The police would investigate the incident.
