Boy dies in freak steel frame accident

2012-12-14 10:04

Pretoria - A 5-year-old boy has died in a freak accident on a smallholding outside Badplaas.

Minutes after Gerrie Kruger, 5, gave his grandmother a little bouquet of grass and flowers, he went to play on a steel frame, which fell over and onto his head, reported Beeld.

The freak accident happened on the smallholding where the boy and his 8-year-old sister lived with their father.

“Tannie, my brother is dead!” screamed the boy’s sister as she ran to an office on the farm where a woman, Karen de Villiers, was working.

De Villiers ran to the little boy.

“I saw his lips were blue and his eyes had already changed colour. There was blood coming out of his ear. I knew he was dead. When I touched his leg, it was limp,” De Villiers said.

His grieving father told how excited his little boy had been about going to “big” school next year.

“And one of his favourite things to do was to pick flowers for his grandmother and to make a bouquet,” he said.

The steel frame fitted onto a truck and the boy presumably was swinging on it when it fell on top of him.

i agree children of that age must hav adult supervision . so tragic i hav a grandson the same age and he is so precious to me so can imagine what his granny is going through

Ulandi, I have three kids, it is impossible to supervise them ALL the time, have a heart... this was just an accident. Prayer with the families, can't imagine how it must feel.

@ jacques.joubert.984 - I do have a heart I was just asking where was an adult that's I'm sorry if everybody thinks that I'm moaning but I'm not and yes my thoughts are with the family people may think not but again I just asked a simply Question and my bitten off.

and yet we all wish for the days when we could run free and have fun like this little man was. Sounds like they were loving life in the veld. Terrible accident, there is no place for judgmental BS here.

Ulandi, so easy to say, why was no Adults outside - but a child of 5 and 8 years can play outside without supervision. Do you have any children? Can you sit with them 24/7 for everything? That is why it was called a freak accident - ! If kids want to swim or something, fine, ALWAYS adult supervision - and other forms of dangerous activities. It was a terrible accident!!! Shame little boy, and grieving parents - it is a part of you that is ripped to pieces once a child is lost. So sorry for your loss!

      ulandi.potgieter - 2012-12-14 11:00

@ teri.bosmanbekker - Yes I have a 2 yr old and if she is playing outside I'm outside with her and when she's in the bath I'm there watching and if I'm busy then my husband is there doing the same and if shes in the house we kept watch as well and yes I know it was a freak accident but like I said I was not Moaning I was just asking where was an adult that's all.

      ulandi.potgieter - 2012-12-14 11:21

@ gareth.p.randall - I fully agree on what you have said there.

      john.silver.3572846 - 2012-12-14 12:21

Come back and post when she is 5.

      ulandi.potgieter - 2012-12-14 13:00

@ john.silver.3572846 - It seems to amuse me how people can't asked where was the adult as everyone else has said it was a freak accident I understand that fully but any way everybody can continue to pick on me on every comment I have wrote it was just a normal Question because a normal person would even just check up now and then on the child but I guess I'm wrong again.

It only takes a minute for an accident like this happen. No point in heaping coals of fire on the adults around him. My prayers go to the family, who will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. What a tragedy.

  • tshwanecyberworks - 2012-12-14 11:52

Rest in peace young one, theres no pain no more.....

  • flaming.oven - 2012-12-14 13:01

This is very upsetting. I will not hesitate to give my life for this boy to enjoy his. My grandson is also 5 years old.

  • teri.bosmanbekker - 2012-12-14 14:04

And even so, if an adult was there - the pole obviously hit his head - there is no way an adult could have stopped that - unless they took the know for it. Asking where an Adult was - is so easy to put some blame on "bad parenting" - but you have NO idea - how much pain these parents are going through and the idea of "What if i was there" Guilt will always be with them> It is awful - ! and so very very very sad.
