Cape Town - A search is under way for a 12-year-old boy who disappeared under water while swimming with friends in a quarry between Deneysville and Oranjeville on Sunday afternoon, the NSRI said.

NSRI Vaal Dam station commander Dick Manten said authorities were activated at 14:30 following reports of a child drowning.

"On arrival, a search commenced for a local [boy] that disappeared under water while swimming with friends in the quarry.

"At this stage no sign of the child has been found and police have opened an investigation. [The] search is continuing," he said.

The NSRI’s crew, police, the SAPS diving unit and the Sasolburg Traffic Department were assisting in the operation.
