Johannesburg - A Potchefstroom boy was in a critical condition on Sunday after being found floating in a swimming pool, paramedics said.

The eight-year-old boy was found in a community pool in Ikageng around 16:00, said ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

"Paramedics responded to the call and found that the young boy had been taken out of the pool and was found lying in a recovery position," he said.

"Paramedics quickly assessed the patient and found that he was not responsive but had a pulse and was shallow breathing."

Advanced life support was performed on the boy before being taken to Potchefstroom provincial hospital for treatment.

"It is believed that the young boy was swimming with his friend for the day and when it was time for the pool to close up they found the patient floating upside down," said Banks.

"It is unclear how long he was under the water for before he was noticed."

floating 'upside down', i've heard of 'face down', upside down would indicate head down and legs up which is not possible. lucky boy, agree!
