Johannesburg - A 9-year-old boy died when he was attacked by bees on his way home from school in King Williamstown, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

The boy was walking home with his peers on Thursday afternoon when a swarm attacked them, spokesperson Captain Ernest Sigobe said.

"The boy died at the scene. We suspect they were playing around with the beehive."

OMG Poor little guy. I have seen a swarm on the war path, it is the most frightening thing I've ever seen.

Terribly sad. We should teach our kids to leave bees alone. I also one poked a beehive in my stupidity when I was small but by the grace of God they didn't attack

My boy is allergic to bees and landed up in hospital because of just one sting. Parents must not under estimate the danger of a bee sting. It is deadly. My thoughts are with the parents.

Terrible way to die. RIP little one. A couple of weeks back a woman, two kids and two dogs were attacked by a swarm of bees. Although badly stung (hundreds of stings) the humans survived but the dogs died. In that article I saw that one of the things one must not do with bees is jump into water cos the bees just wait on top and start stinging you again when you surface. What one must do, if you can, is run as fast as possible away from the bees for about 200m.

I hope they teach the kids at school about the dangers of bees. Sad story.

Bees will never attack unless provoked.
