Cape Town - The body of a 12-year-old boy has been retrieved from a quarry between Deneysville and Oranjeville, police have confirmed.

The child had disappeared under water while swimming with friends in a quarry on Sunday afternoon, the NSRI said earlier.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Livhuhani Hani said a body has been removed from the water and an inquest docket has been opened into the drowning.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon told News24 that when its members arrived at the scene after being called to assist, police refused to allow them access.

This despite family members of the missing child pleading for them to be allowed to help, he said.

But Hani said the scene had already been cordoned off and police divers had been responding to the incident.
