Boy's foot impaled by rod

2013-11-02 22:43

Johannesburg - A boy was seriously injured in a field in Lenham Drive, Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday when he fell on a reinforced steel rod which went through his foot, paramedics said.

"Reports indicate that the child was playing a game [of soccer] with friends when he fell onto a reinforcement rod at around 16:30," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

"Netcare 911 paramedics and the eThekwini fire department arrived at the scene and found the boy with the steel rod pinned through his foot."

The Jaws of Life were used to free the boy from the rod, which impaled the boy's foot and exited through his ankle.

"After the patient was cut free and stabilised, he was transported to a local hospital under the constant care of an advanced life support paramedic for the care that he required," Botha said.
