Johannesburg - Six boys have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 16-year-old girl in Letsitele, outside Tzaneen in Limpopo, police said on Sunday.

"It is alleged that on Saturday 30 June 2012 at around 18:30 the minor was being accompanied home by a male friend when they were joined by five other friends," said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

"She was allegedly dragged into an empty house, held down were the six boys, all minors, between the ages of 15 and 17 took turns raping her from 19:00 until 04:00 yesterday [Sunday] morning."

The girl managed to escape through a broken window and alerted a passer-by, who contacted police.

Following a search, five of the six boys were arrested. The sixth boy was arrested after 18:00 on Sunday.

"[The] police investigation revealed that the perpetrators were seen consuming alcohol at one of the well known establishments in Ngwamitwa (Letsitele)," said Mulaudzi.

The six boys were expected to appear in Ritavi Magistrate's Court soon.

@gavin - and I don't care if they were consuming alcohol or not either. They are responsible for their actions, sober or drunk. B@stards. Hope the girl receives effective trauma counselling and that they get the maximum sentence allowable under law.

Corporal punishment will be a good start to their jail sentence.

as usual there is no follow up report if the victim received any medical attention. Do they after such attacks, to help the victim and be treated for any infections or against pregnancy?

@keith, if the authorities do their jobs as they are supposed to she will definitely be given anti-retrovirals for a month to my knowledge. Don't know about other STD's though. Guess the 'morning after pill' may also be given to her.

That poor girl. How do you ever get over or cope after having gone through something like that? As there is no other option, I would think that spending the rest of their miserable lives behind bars would be the only suitable punishment.

These boys were never taught respect by their parents or their elders. They dont even respect themselves, never mind someone else. Are we not lectured on the fact that respect is part of the African culture? These cowards are also probably of the sort who torture animals. I wonder who's example they are following? They will most probably retain the services of some b@stard defence lawyer who will cry out first offence and that the girl was not beaten up, never mind the emotional trauma she endured. Throw away the key I say, no I demand it!

This poor girl's life is ruined and the boys will be free soonl. This deserves the death penalty, but as we know they will be released on good behaviour and then they will ruin another child's life, and yet another and another and another! Stone them - they did not show her mercy, why should they?
