Johannesburg - Prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach believes her suspension will have a detrimental effect on commercial crime in South Africa, Eyewitness News reported on Wednesday.

The NPA suspended Breytenbach last year.

It charged that mining company Imperial Crown Trading had complained about her handling of a criminal case against it, and that she was too close to criminal lawyer Mike Hellens.

Breytenbach contends she was suspended for not wanting the fraud charges against former police crime intelligence head Lieutenant General Richard Mdluli withdrawn.

She told EWN that her suspension has been stressful and has had a significant impact on her personal and professional life.

She added that she believes she upheld the real principles of the NPA and prosecutors, and that the legal battle was about principle.

The last witness in her disciplinary hearing was called on Tuesday. A judgment is expected to be delivered when the hearing resumes at the NPA's headquarters in Silverton, east of Pretoria, on 6 May.
