Bridge collapse: Missing bodies found

Johannesburg - Fourteen people died after a bridge collapsed on the R65 between Lothair and Ermelo due to heavy rains, the Mpumalanga community safety department said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said three vehicles, one of them a taxi, were involved in the accident.

"The bridge goes over a dam and it collapsed. The cars drove over the collapsed bridge and were swept away by high volumes of water."

The bridge collapsed around 21:50 on Monday night, with six people initially killed and others missing.

"Police have retrieved the missing bodies," Mabuza said.

"The road has been closed that leads to Lothair, and will only be open for people residing in the area."

Motorists should use the R33, N17 and the Ermelo/Mpuluzi road as alternative routes.

"We have realised there is a prediction of higher rainfall in the province and people should be cautious when driving, especially when they see water on the road," Mabuza said.

"They should stop and inspect the water, because it could be dangerous to drive further down the road."

Condolenses to the families for loss of life. SA roads are very bad, if not potholes, they are badly maintained, don't have an idea when was these bridge or others serviced.., there is probably no money to do that.

Stop and inspect the road? That is not possible in Jhb!!! You stop and then other drivers drive over you!! And with the speed with some of this trucks? No way that a normal person will risk their life to stop to do inspection in that way!! Road inspections is to be done by the states road works!! We pay our tax every month!! Do your jobs!!!

Forget about the hazard of causing an accident, worry about being hi-jacked while checking if the road is safe to drive on. - Only in SA.

If it was built by a tenderpreneur then that company as well as the ministry who awarded the tender must be held responsible and accountable and be dragged off to court. The ANC is in politics for the money
