Bungling principal loses exam papers

2012-10-25 22:38

Johannesburg - A Soweto school principal lost a box of 20 matric science exam papers when he forgot them on the roof of his car on Thursday morning, the Gauteng education department said.

"When loading his car, he appears to have put the box with exam papers on the roof of the vehicle. He drove off forgetting to put the box inside the vehicle," the department said in a statement.

The man who made the blunder was headmaster of the Phefeni Senior Secondary School in Orlando West.

He was also the chief invigilator and tasked with picking up the exams at the local collection point.

An extra box of exam papers was sent to the school. All pupils completed the exam.

Answer papers submitted by pupils at four schools in the area would be scrutinised to determine if they had prior knowledge of the exam's content.

The principal, who was not named, was suspended from his exam duties pending an investigation.

    It happens.

      Dumblabrat - 2012-10-25 22:53

Oh yeah sure he forgot the box on the roof of his car! Who was there to pick it up when it "fell off"? What a load of crap......

      lsfreak - 2012-10-25 23:09

Yeah sure... Likely story that :/ I remember way back in the darkages when I finished school, the chief invigilator came from another school to prevent things like cheating. But then again that was when school was school and not the joke it is 2day :D

      lsfreak - 2012-10-25 23:11

Oh forgot, On a side note does everybodies children in High School, that are not writting at the moment, also get off from 12:00 for the rest of the year (Gr 8&9) :/

      warren.slater.353 - 2012-10-26 00:00

It's actually quite easy to do. While loading my car I put my laptop on the dry roof of my car as the ground was wet. My phone rang, I jumped into my car, chatted and then drove off. With a bit of distraction one can make this kind of mistake. What really matters is how he reacted when he discovered the mistake, it seems like he fessed up and that doesn't happen too often these days. Let's face it, if it were a scam he could have just copied them in private and it'd be far less likely anyone would have known. Cut the guy some slack...I think he deserves it.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-10-26 00:11

gollum, done the very same thing, drove off with my laptop on the roof. did the same thing with my wallet once, after filling up the car. David Cameron, the Brit PM, left his child behind at a pub he and his wife ate at. We all do stupid things, I don't think there is any hidden agenda here.

      chris.braum - 2012-10-26 03:01

It sure does! Happened to me a few times.

      david.coetzee.77 - 2012-10-26 08:31

Come on People give the guy the benifit of the doubt. I am more surprised that 20 kids wrote science exams in his school

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-25 22:51

The same forgetfulness has probably hit all of us. Lunch boxes, books, etc.

Lost my glsses a number of times. I cannot mention how many time I have lost car and house keys. Once my husband had to 300 km bringing keys. This sounds like a genuine mistake.

      gary.bloom.967 - 2012-10-31 11:57

probably hit News24 as well..."The principal, who was not named", but they said previously that he was the principle of the Phefeni Senior Secondary School in Orlando West..........lolz.

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-10-25 22:52

And then they shot him?? *looking around hopefully*

  • gretchen.oswald.3 - 2012-10-25 22:52

Here we go......first sign of exam papers being "doctored" with. Suppose all 20 lucky pupils will automatically be given pass marks with destinctions.

      SharonE - 2012-10-26 08:59

"An extra box of exam papers was sent to the school. All pupils completed the exam." He made a mistake, and, apart from feeling really stupid, he is facing the consequences. We have become so critical that we can't even recognise an honest mistake anymore!! I am a scatterbrain, and have had to turn around to fetch my handbag forgotten in a number of places many more times than once. If my head wasn't screwed on, I'd probably leave it somewhere as well! I can empathise with this poor man...

  • melusi.myaluza - 2012-10-25 22:56

This doesn't make sense,he fetched the papers alone without an escort and put them on the roof of his his car,but I thought the papers were supposed to be under tight security,so why was he fetching the papers alone, something just doesn't add up here, please jail him for corruption and fire his ass!!!!!

      di.hingley - 2012-10-25 23:05

I agree with you melusi...when I was still teaching we had to register each person collecting exam papers and there had to be two or more people collecting them......something doesn't add up here!

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-26 09:26

Come on melusi. Principals are suppose to have dignity. Commissionaires of oath, You cant send a guard with all around, everyday. Stop judging before the exams results is not out. There are many other ways he could have made "a plan", but he revealed his mistake. @di. Yes, maybe there was supposed to be 2, but did both then signed or did they send the committed principle to do it all on his own because he was the only one available? Still saying wait for the results!!!

  • uraharabluekisuke - 2012-10-25 22:58

Hmmm, that's like saying the bank forgot to lock its doors overnight and wonder why the safes are empty

  • Cameron - 2012-10-25 23:17

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-25 23:17

You don't lose a whole box of 20 exam papers if you try to leak them. Too obvious and clearly overkilling. It was just one of those little oddities life sometimes throws one's way.

I remember when it happened to me, when I was looking for my car keys for about a minute, had to laugh at myself when I realised that I have been holding them in my hand all along. all you need is just a bit if a destruction...

  • Zenande Carly Dlunge - 2012-10-26 06:27

Oh pliz let's give him a break. He just had a lot on his mind. I know for a fact that not only learners are under a lot of stress during exams their teachers too. I know a lady teacher who left both her handbag and some test papers on the roof of her car. So really it does happen.

  • ianthe.exall - 2012-10-26 08:23

What's the going rate this year for Matric exam papers?

  • maphile - 2012-10-26 08:42

Taking responsibility comes with consequences and if your mind is not on the job stay at home. This is blatant irresponsibility and cannot be tolerated especially with the education system facing so much pressure. Good riddance, go home Mr Principal.

  • JNaMolefe - 2012-10-26 08:49

I also did before, i put my lunchbox on the roof of my car, i just rushed into my car and drove off, i forgot the lunchbox as well.. hehehehe, life's so funny. I had to buy another one lol

  • Andrea - 2012-10-26 09:03

This moron should not be allowed behind the wheel of a bloody car, let alone be in charge of science exam papers!

  • eugene.brink.9 - 2012-10-26 09:07

What is a principal doing with science exam papers? Shouldn't it be the exclusive preserve of the relevant teacher and HOD to handle them? If he wanted to look at it, he should've just taken one or read it as an attachment in an email.

      sam.moloko.9 - 2012-10-26 12:17

No eugene the principal is the chief invigilator for all papers so he must collect every exam paper from the area office n only open de package inside de exam venue. He is perfectly right. No hod or relevant teacher here.

  • john.p.steyn - 2012-10-26 09:08

The guy was just having a bad day all of you former NP voters. Lighten up! Go and have a koeksister and koppie boeretroos with tante Betsy Verwoerd in Orania and bemoan the state of the nation. ; )
