POLICE made the gruesome discovery of a mangled and burnt body in a bush in the France township outside Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

Alexandra police officers along with members of the K9 unit worked tirelessly yesterday to trace the body of what police sources believe may be a young woman or teenager.

Police were called by a frantic France resident who discovered a burnt arm and a few other human bones in her back yard yesterday, which the resident presumes a dog dragged in.

A search then began throughout a large area of veld opposite the house, as police tried to locate areas where the grass was burnt.

With the help of police dogs, officers found the grizzly remains of a body, mangled and burnt in the bushes.

The body was not intact, and police believe dogs or other animals may have torn it apart.

According to Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Ngobese, it is believed to be a female body, however, due to the extensive burns, mangling and decomposition, it is difficult to determine this exactly.

“We urge the public to contact the police if they know of anyone who has gone missing in the area. We will now begin the processes of extracting DNA to identify the body,” Ngobese said
