Johannesburg - A burst water pipe caused power disruptions in the Pretoria CBD on Monday, the City of Tshwane said.

"A water pipe burst at city hall has left electricity cables and panels submerged in water at the hall's substation causing a power failure in some parts of Pretoria CBD," spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said in a statement.

"It is suspected that an unknown person damaged the water pipelines while trying to steal them," he said.

Several streets including Kgosi Mampuru, Nana Sita, Skietpoort, Princes Park, Freedom Park, Jacob Mare, Schubart, Visagie, Charlotte Maxeke, and Bosman streets were affected.

"The city's technicians and plumbers are busy with the repairs," said Mashigo.
