Cape Town - Three people, including a pregnant woman, were injured in an accident involving a bus and a BMW in the Cape Town CBD on Monday morning, according to paramedics.

Metro rescue officials battled for one-and-a-half hours to free the bus driver from the bus, which had slammed into the pillar of a building on Long Street after being hit by the BMW, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Lauren Copley.

"Paramedics stated he sustained a compound leg fracture and suspected foot fracture. He was stabilised on scene before being transported by ambulance to Netcare Christiaan Barnard hospital," Copley said.

Two female passengers in the BMW, including the pregnant woman, sustained light injuries.

Both patients were stabilised at the scene before being transported by ambulance to Somerset Hospital.

Copley said while the cause of the accident was unclear, it was believed that the BMW had skipped a traffic light at high speed and hit the bus.

One of the male passengers in the BMW apparently fled the scene, she said.

Attempts to reach the police were not successful.
