Johannesburg - A Metrobus driver was lucky to escape with his life on Wednesday morning when the bus he was driving crashed off a bridge.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring told News24 that the driver apparently lost control of the bus and it went through the barricades of Queen Elizabeth II bridge in Braamfontein.

According to Eyewitness News, the bus was literally hanging onto the bridge by its back wheels.

Meiring added that no other occupants were in the bus at the time.

Rescue services are on scene. The driver was taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
