MORE than 1 000 IFP supporters gathered at the Truro Hall in Northdale yesterday to welcome party president Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Arriving mostly in buses, wearing T-shirts with the Inkatha Freedom Party logo, the supporters sang and danced outside the hall before gathering inside, waiting patiently for Buthelezi to arrive.

The rally was held to welcome more than 400 new members poached from the African National Congress (ANC) and the National Freedom Party (NFP) in Pietermaritzburg.

Buthelezi entered the hall to a wave of joyful jubilation, with the crowd raising their fists in solidarity.

In his speech, Buthelezi shared the party’s values and slammed other parties for corruption and mismanagement of state funds.

“When I look at the billions of rands that vanish every year, in wasteful, irregular and fruitless expenditure … I wonder how those in leadership can dare look you in the eye,” Buthelezi said.

Ending his speech, Buthelezi reiterated his welcome, complimenting the 400 new members of the party for making a “good decision”.

The rally comes ahead of the local government elections scheduled for next year
