By-elections taking place in four provinces

Johannesburg - By-elections are taking place in four provinces on Wednesday.

Twelve candidates representing four political parties were contesting by-elections in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said.

In the Eastern Cape a by-election was taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay's Ward 30.

It was being contested by the African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance and the United Democratic Movement.

The ward became vacant when the previous ANC councillor died.

Two by-elections were taking place in the Free State.

Ward 14 of the Maluti a Phofung municipality (Qwa-Qwa) was being contested by the ANC and the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa, a political party in the province.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor died.

In the Mantsopa municipality (Ladybrand), Ward 8 was being contested by the ANC and the DA.

The previous ANC councillor had died.

In Gauteng, Ward 55 in the Tshwane metro municipality wsa being contested by the ANC and the DA.

The ward was previously represented by the DA but became vacant when the councillor resigned.

Two by-elections were being held in Mpumalanga.

Ward 3 in the Pixley Ka Seme municipality (Volksrust) was uncontested. The only candidate is Teboho Victor Hlakutse of the ANC.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor resigned.

In the Mbombela municipality (Nelspruit) Ward 17 was being contested by the ANC and DA.

The previous DA councillor had resigned.
