Johannesburg - By-elections will take place in five provinces on Wednesday, with one ward being contested in each province, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said.

The by-elections will be taking place in the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and the Western Cape.

Candidates representing 12 political parties and three independents would contest the five wards.

In the Free State, Ward 10 in the Moqhaka municipality (Kroonstad) would be contested by the African National Congress and the Congress of the People.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor died.

Ward Five in the Emfuleni municipality (Vereeniging) in Gauteng would be contested by the ANC and the Democratic Alliance.

The former DA councillor has resigned.

In Mpumalanga, Ward 29 in the Steve Tshwete municipality (Middelburg) would be contested by two independent candidates, Themba Lucas Mahlangu and Thibedi Robert Madisa, the ANC and the DA.

The ward became vacant when the previous ANC councillor died.

In the Northern Cape, Ward Four in the Magareng municipality (Warrenton) would be contested by independent candidate Mmalefu Aphaphina Mochane and the ANC.

In the Western Cape, Ward Five in the Theewaterskloof municipality (Caledon) would be contested by the ANC and the DA.
