Johannesburg - Municipal ward by-elections were underway in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, and the Western Cape on Wednesday, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said.

A total of six wards were being contested by 18 candidates representing six political parties, and three independent candidates, IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said.

"All in all, they [the elections are] going very well... everything is looking good," she said.

"We are encouraging people to go out and vote in their local areas."

One by-election was taking place in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ward Two in Impendle was being contested by the ANC, the IFP and the National Freedom Party (NFP).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC, but the councillor resigned.

A by-election in Ward 4, in Jozini, northern KwaZulu-Natal had been cancelled.

The IEC said on Monday there were possible irregularities in the registration of voters, which were brought to its attention by political role-players in the municipality.

Two by-elections were taking place in Mpumalanga.

Ward 7, in the Albert Luthuli municipality, was being contested by the ANC, the Congress of the People, and the IFP.

The previous ANC councillor had also resigned.

Ward 6, in the Thaba Chweu municipality, was being contested by the ANC and an independent candidate.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC, but became vacant when the councillor resigned.

More by-elections

One by-election was taking place in the Northern Cape.

Ward 1, in Nama Khoi (Springbok), was being contested by the ANC and the DA.

The ward was previously represented by the DA, but the councillor resigned.

Two by-elections were taking place in the Western Cape.

Ward 105, in the City of Cape Town, was being contested by the ANC and the DA.

The previous DA councillor also resigned.

Ward 6, in George, would be contested by two independent candidates, the ANC, Cope, the DA, and the Independent Civic Organisation of SA.

The ward became vacant when the DA councillor died.

The IEC said a total of 35 127 voters were registered in the six wards and the 27 voting districts where the by-elections were taking place.
